Description
Akitaru Obi is the captain of Special Fire Force Company 8. He stands 189 centimeters tall with a powerful, muscular build weighing 108 kilograms. He has short, dark hair shaved on the sides and small, dark brown eyes. On duty, he wears fireproof bunker gear marked with blue stripes and a prominent number eight patch, including a jacket, helmet with face shield, gloves, and boots. Off duty, he typically wears a simple grey jumpsuit.

Before founding Company 8, Obi served as a decorated firefighter in the conventional Fire Defence Agency. He received two commendations for his service, but both were revoked because he repeatedly disobeyed orders to prioritize saving civilians. A pivotal incident occurred when he witnessed members of a Fire Force company refuse to help a woman whose husband had become an Infernal, citing a point-based system. With Takehisa Hinawa’s aid, Obi laid the victim to rest, an event that directly led him to establish Company 8 with a dual mission of suppressing Infernals while investigating systemic corruption.

Obi has no pyrokinetic abilities. To compensate, he maintains peak physical conditioning through relentless training and carries over thirty kilograms of specialized equipment, including a Core Annihilating Pile Bunker, a firefighting axe, an electromagnetic orb to disrupt pyrokinetics, flame-extinguishing grenades, and a reinforced shield. His physical strength is extraordinary for a normal human; he can rip train tracks from the ground and bend steel with his bare hands. This ability is described as hysterical strength, a state where he pushes past normal human limits in life-threatening situations.

Personality-wise, Obi is generally warm, approachable, and often jokes with his subordinates, treating them like family. However, this easygoing demeanor vanishes when faced with disrespect toward the dead or their families. He holds the ethical conviction that cleansing an Infernal is a necessary but tragic form of murder. He enforces a strict rule that weapons must never be displayed in front of a grieving family and becomes furious when this rule is broken. His primary motivation is to perform his duty with humanity and justice, ensuring survivors are treated with respect.

As captain of Company 8, Obi provides strategic and moral leadership. He mentors younger members like Shinra Kusakabe and Arthur Boyle, acting as a father figure. He shares a deep bond with his lieutenant and co-founder, Takehisa Hinawa. His integrity earns respect from unlikely sources, including Captain Hibana and Captain Benimaru Shinmon.

Over the course of the story, Obi endures capture by the White-Clad cult, who implant an Adolla Bug meant to transform him into an Infernal, but his hardened muscles prevent it from penetrating. He later faces his own doppelganger and is killed in battle. After the world is recreated, he is brought back to life. The Special Fire Forces are disbanded, and Obi becomes the commander-in-chief of the new World Heroes Force, eventually rising to its president.
