TV-Series
Description
Hatori Sohma belongs to the Sohma family, burdened by the Chinese Zodiac curse. His transformation takes the unexpected form of a small seahorse, not the Dragon spirit, a phenomenon viewed within the family as evidence of the curse weakening. Standing 182 cm (6'0") tall, he has black hair typically styled with bangs obscuring his left eye, which suffers near-total blindness from an injury caused by Akito Sohma, the family head. He serves as the Sohma family's private physician.
Hailing from a lineage entrusted with memory suppression techniques, Hatori inherited this responsibility from his father. The technique utilizes hypnosis to erase the memories of outsiders who witness the family's curse. His childhood was scarred by loss; his mother succumbed to illness during his elementary years, and his father died from unspecified causes during Hatori's high school years, contributing to his reserved and stoic nature. He attended school with Shigure and Ayame Sohma, forming the close "Mabudachi Trio." In his youth, he was forced to erase the memories of Yuki Sohma's childhood friends after an accidental transformation, straining their bond. He later performed the same procedure on Momiji Sohma's mother at her request, resulting in lasting guilt and a protective, almost paternal, concern for Momiji.
Approximately two years before the main events, Hatori began a relationship with Kana Sohma, his medical assistant. Her cheerful nature, symbolized by her belief that melting snow becomes "spring," contrasted with his emotional reserve, which he likened to "snow." Despite initial hesitation due to the curse, they fell deeply in love. When Hatori sought Akito's permission to marry Kana, Akito violently refused, striking Hatori's eye with a vase. The trauma caused Kana to blame herself, leading to severe depression. To end her suffering, Hatori erased her memories of their relationship. Kana eventually left her position, married another man, and moved on, while Hatori internalized the loss, convinced he did not deserve happiness.
Afterwards, Shigure arranged a reunion between Hatori and Mayuko Shiraki, Kana's best friend and a literature teacher who had harbored unspoken feelings for him since their first meeting. Initially resistant, Hatori gradually developed a relationship with Mayuko. Her patience and understanding helped him confront his guilt and struggles with self-worth, enabling him to envision a future beyond the curse's shadow.
Following the breaking of the Zodiac curse, Hatori fully embraced this future. He married Mayuko, and in the sequel series *Fruits Basket Another*, they have a daughter named Kinu Sohma. He continues his career as a physician, though no longer exclusively serving the Sohma family. He maintains his friendships with Shigure and Ayame, often acting as the grounded counterbalance to their eccentricities. While still reserved, his later life reflects quiet contentment, centered on his family and medical work, marking a departure from the isolation and duty that once defined him.
