Description
Janemba serves as the primary antagonist in the twelfth Dragon Ball Z film, Fusion Reborn. His origin lies in the afterlife, where a small, lazy ogre known as the Saike Demon was tasked with monitoring the Soul Cleansing Machine, a device that purifies evil energy. Due to the ogre's negligence, the machine malfunctioned and exploded, releasing a massive accumulation of unchecked negative energy and evil intent that had gathered over countless generations. This cosmic evil immediately engulfed the ogre, transforming him into a monstrous, colossal entity: Janemba. Upon his accidental creation, Janemba appeared on the roof of King Yemma's palace in Hell, trapping the king within an unbreakable magical barrier.

In his initial form, Janemba is a large, rotund, and predominantly yellow creature. This form possesses a childlike demeanor, characterized by playful but highly destructive behavior, a limited vocabulary that consists primarily of shouting his own name, and a tendency to treat combat as a game. Despite this seemingly innocent appearance, he is a being of pure destructive impulse. His primary motivation is not conquest or domination in a traditional sense, but rather the chaotic and nihilistic drive to spread disorder simply for his own amusement. He demonstrates this by warping the very fabric of Hell and the mortal world according to his whims, turning the afterlife's landscapes into a surreal, colorful, and crystalline fantasy realm. His power is so immense that his mere existence disrupts the fundamental laws of the universe, breaking the barrier between life and death. This causes every previously deceased soul, including past villains like Frieza and his army, to return to the land of the living, creating widespread chaos on Earth.

In the story, Janemba's overwhelming power immediately interrupts a martial arts tournament in the afterlife, forcing the hero Goku to investigate. After Goku proves to be a genuine challenge in his Super Saiyan 3 form, Janemba demonstrates a crucial ability: transformation. When his first body is nearly destroyed, he sheds it and reveals his second, far more terrifying form, sometimes referred to as Super Janemba. This new body is lean, muscular, and humanoid, with orange-red skin, sharp horns, and a long tail. His personality undergoes a complete shift, abandoning the playful nature of his first form for a sinister, silent, and ruthlessly efficient demeanor. In this state, he rarely speaks, communicating only through grunts and menacing laughter, and focuses entirely on the systematic destruction of his opponents.

His key relationships in the film are exclusively adversarial. He fights against Goku, effortlessly overpowering him even in his strongest Super Saiyan 3 state. He also faces Vegeta, who has been temporarily restored to a physical body by Janemba's own reality-warping powers. Together, the two Saiyans are completely outmatched by Super Janemba, who toys with them and easily deflects their combined assault. He also briefly fights the West Galaxy warrior Pikkon. Janemba views all of these characters as obstacles to be eliminated and derives sadistic pleasure from demonstrating his absolute superiority over them in combat.

Janemba possesses a wide array of unique and reality-defying abilities that make him one of the most formidable foes in the Dragon Ball film canon. He is a powerful reality warper, capable of altering the physical laws of entire dimensions and transmuting inanimate objects into weapons, most notably transforming a simple stone club into a deadly magic sword. His command over space includes creating dimensional portals to deflect energy attacks back at his foes or to punch his opponents from impossible angles. His signature evasive technique is the Bunkai Teleport, which allows him to disassemble his body into a shower of cubic particles and instantly reconstruct himself elsewhere, making him nearly impossible to pin down. He also demonstrates the ability to create small, sentient clones of both himself and his enemies to counter their attacks. Despite his immense power, Janemba has a bizarre and notable weakness: insults. When verbally abused, his body and magical constructs physically crack like glass, causing him genuine pain and momentary vulnerability—a flaw that Pikkon discovers and exploits to buy precious time for Goku and Vegeta.

Janemba does not undergo a traditional emotional development arc, as he is a static incarnation of evil. However, his physical transformation from the fat yellow giant to the lean super demon represents a shift from chaotic, playful evil to focused, lethal malevolence. His ultimate defeat does not come from being overpowered by brute force alone but from being purified. After Goku and Vegeta successfully perform the Fusion Dance to become the singular warrior Gogeta, the fused fighter uses a special technique called the Soul Punisher (or Stardust Breaker). This attack does not simply destroy Janemba through sheer energy but instead purges the accumulated evil energy that forms his body. As the evil is cleansed, Janemba is unable to maintain his form and reverts back to the innocent, terrified ogre, revealing that the original soul was merely a victim of the malevolent force that had consumed him.
