Description
Kazuma Kuwabara begins the series as Sarayashiki Junior High's self-proclaimed delinquent and second-toughest student, trailing only Yusuke Urameshi. He commands a small gang featuring Kirishima, Okubo, and Sawamura. Kuwabara possesses a natural sensitivity to spiritual energy, which he calls "the Tickle," enabling him to detect supernatural beings and sense emotions or intentions. He resides with his older sister, Shizuru Kuwabara. His parents appear infrequently, with his father briefly acknowledging Yukina's presence in the manga. Following the series' events, Yukina lives with the Kuwabara family as a homestay guest.

Physically, Kuwabara stands roughly 6'3" (191 cm), an exceptional height for a Japanese teenager. He boasts a muscular build and broad shoulders, crowned by thick red-orange hair styled in a pompadour. His standard attire is a light blue school jumpsuit, distinct from the regular uniform. For major conflicts like the Dark Tournament finals, he adopts a bōsōzoku-inspired look: a white military overcoat emblazoned with his family name in kanji, white pants tucked into black jackboots, and bandages around his abdomen. He switches to casual wear like hoodies and jeans during the Chapter Black Saga.

Kuwabara's personality blends fierce loyalty, a strict moral code, and occasional hot-headedness. He prioritizes protecting the weak, refuses theft or extortion, and adamantly avoids fighting women. Despite frequent characterizations as unintelligent or unattractive, he displays notable perseverance and unexpected cleverness, such as passing a critical science exam through dedicated study or deducing tactical solutions mid-battle. He harbors deep affection for Yukina, an ice apparition he rescues early on, though his romantic advances are often misunderstood due to her naivety about human emotions. His relationship with Yusuke evolves from intense rivalry to steadfast friendship, marked by mutual respect and frequent banter. He maintains cordial relations with Kurama but openly clashes with Hiei, despite an underlying camaraderie.

Kuwabara's spiritual abilities develop significantly. Starting as basic awareness, he learns to materialize his spirit energy into a Spirit Sword during Genkai's tournament. This weapon evolves: he masters dual-wielding, extends its length, and temporarily wields the regenerative Trial Sword. During the Chapter Black Saga, his latent powers undergo a metamorphosis, awakening the Dimension Sword (Jigen Tō), capable of cutting through space, dimensions, and psychic territories. This ability makes him a target for Shinobu Sensui, who seeks to exploit it to breach the barrier to the Demon Plane. Kuwabara also exhibits auxiliary powers, including telepathy with Yukina, precognitive visions, and spiritual purification. By the series' end, his power level reaches S-Class in the anime or A-Class in the manga, solidifying his status among the strongest humans.

His story spans multiple sagas. After Yusuke's death, Kuwabara's grief drives him to disrupt the wake, highlighting his deep, combative respect. As a Spirit Detective ally, he assists in cases like retrieving stolen Underworld treasures and defeating the Four Beasts at Maze Castle. His rescue of Yukina from crime boss Tarukane cements his protective role. During the Dark Tournament, he endures brutal fights, including a near-fatal confrontation with Dr. Ichigaki's brainwashed warriors where his refusal to harm innocents proves pivotal. He later sacrifices himself in a staged death to motivate Yusuke against Toguro. In the Chapter Black Saga, Kuwabara's Dimension Sword becomes central to Sensui's plans, leading to his capture and forced barrier-cutting. Post-series, he shifts focus to academics but remains involved in supernatural affairs. During the Three Kings arc, he declines entering the Demon Plane to study for university entrance exams. Unofficially succeeding Yusuke as Spirit Detective, he trains under Genkai, Kuroko Sato, and martial arts instructors, honing his swordsmanship and spiritual prowess. He confronts threats like the demon Rando and demonic infiltrators while balancing school life, showcasing his commitment to both human and spiritual responsibilities.
