Description
Kumiko Omae plays euphonium in Kitauji High School's concert band, having begun her musical journey in middle school under the inspiration of her trombone-playing older sister, Mamiko. As a member of Daikichiyama Middle School Band, she earned a gold award in prefectural tournaments but faced disappointment when the group failed to reach nationals, leaving unresolved tensions with fellow trumpet player Reina Kousaka.

Initially indecisive and socially awkward, Kumiko frequently questioned her motivations and avoided direct confrontations or expressing her feelings. Despite this, she consistently showed empathy toward peers and gradually cultivated stronger determination toward the band during her first year. Her evolving friendship with Reina Kousaka became a driving force in her pursuit of musical excellence.

In her second year, depicted in "Our Promise: A Brand New Day," Kumiko mentored first-year students—euphonium player Kanade Hisaishi, tuba player Mirei Suzuki, and contrabass player Motomu Tsukinaga. She mediated conflicts by persuading Mirei to rejoin after SunFes festival alienation and intervened when Kanade deliberately underperformed in auditions due to past trauma with middle school seniority dynamics, helping Kanade recommit to music.

Personally, Kumiko briefly dated childhood friend Shuuichi Tsukamoto before mutually ending the relationship to prioritize the band’s competition preparations, reflecting her heightened focus on leadership and musical goals. The band performed "Liz and the Blue Bird" at Kansai competition but received a "dud gold" medal, failing to advance to nationals.

As third-year concert band president, Kumiko confronted challenges including near-mass boycott threats from discontented first-years and supporting Motomu Tsukinaga through struggles tied to his sister’s death. She facilitated communication between Motomu and his advisor, resolving interpersonal conflicts. Academically uncertain about her future, she discussed career options with peers like Hazuki Katou and Tsubame Kamaya; Reina Kousaka suggested music school, though Kumiko hesitated about pursuing music professionally.

Her leadership blended empathy and direct communication, bridging gaps between senior and junior members. She sustained close bonds with friends including Hazuki, Sapphire Kawashima, and Reina—her relationship with Reina remaining a central, emotionally significant element of her growth.
