Description
Enel is a former tyrant and the self-proclaimed god of the sky island Skypiea. He serves as the primary antagonist of the Skypiea Arc, a ruler who holds absolute power and demands absolute obedience from his subjects. Originally from the sky island of Birka, Enel used the devastating powers of the Goro Goro no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to create, control, and transform into lightning, to completely destroy his homeland. Shortly after this act of annihilation, he led his followers to the neighboring island of Skypiea, where he overthrew the then-ruler, Gan Fall, and seized the title of "God," a position he held for six years until his downfall.
Enel's personality is defined by an immense, all-consuming god complex. He genuinely believes himself to be a divine, immortal, and invincible being, possessing the absolute authority to do, take, or destroy anything he pleases. This belief manifests as a detached, arrogant, and hedonistic demeanor. He spends his days in relaxed leisure, sleeping and being waited upon, and enters battles with a bored, amused expression, hardly ever taking his opponents seriously. His signature laugh is a distinctive "Yahahaha." Enel holds no regard for any life other than his own, viewing the mass killing of his own followers or innocent citizens not as a moral transgression but as a casual act of divine judgment, often laughing maniacally as he carries out his plans to annihilate entire populations. However, his overconfidence has a critical flaw; when faced with an unforeseen situation that his powers cannot directly overcome, such as discovering his lightning attacks have no effect on the rubber-bodied Monkey D. Luffy, his composure shatters, revealing desperation and genuine horror.
Enel's primary driving motivation is to reach a place he calls "Fairy Vearth," which he believes to be the true, legendary homeland of a god. To achieve this goal, he used his electrical powers in tandem with the island's rich gold resources to construct a massive, flying warship named the Ark Maxim. This vessel is uniquely powered by his own electricity, with gold acting as a conductor for its mechanics. His role in the larger story is centered entirely on the Skypiea Arc, where he forces the inhabitants, along with the invading Straw Hat Pirates and the native Shandia warriors, into a brutal "Survival Game." He announces that only five survivors will be permitted to remain, intending to annihilate everyone else before departing for Fairy Vearth.
Enel's key relationships are defined by utility and a complete lack of genuine emotional connection. He commands a devout following known as the "God's Army," which includes four powerful Priests and 50 Enforcers. However, he has no real care for them, easily badmouthing or killing his own subordinates without a second thought, as he considers them unworthy of his new empire. The people of Skypiea live in constant terror of him, as his ability to sense conversations across the entire island allows him to silence any dissent with a devastating lightning strike from the sky, a punishment they call "Heaven's Judgment." His primary enemy among the Skypieans is the fierce warrior Wyper, who carries a deep-seated hatred for Enel after the god destroyed his ancestors' homeland and is willing to sacrifice his own life to defeat him. In a strange twist, after Enel is defeated by Luffy, he successfully flies the Ark Maxim to the Moon, which is revealed to be the Fairy Vearth he sought. There, he encounters a race of small, robotic Automata, who come to see him as their savior, allowing him to establish a new empire as their ruler.
In terms of development, Enel remains a largely static character. His overwhelming power is so absolute within his environment that his personality never needs to evolve. The one significant change he undergoes is external rather than internal; after being defeated by Luffy, he follows through on his plan, achieves his ambition, and transitions from the terrestrial "God" of Skypiea to the cosmic ruler of the Moon.
Enel's most notable abilities are almost unparalleled among the antagonists Luffy and his crew have faced. As the user of the Goro Goro no Mi, his body is made of lightning, granting him immense speed that allows for near-instantaneous travel and intangibility that makes him impervious to most physical attacks. He can unleash controlled electrical discharges up to a maximum of 200 million volts. Beyond raw offensive power, his abilities are highly versatile. He can use the heat generated by his electricity, a technique called "Electro-metalurgy," to melt gold and reshape it into weapons, creating a heated trident to bypass Luffy's immunity to blunt force and shocks. Even more dangerously, he can combine his Devil Fruit with a form of Observation Haki known in Skypiea as "Mantra." By reading the electrical waves in the air, Enel can effectively "listen" to every conversation across the entire island of Skypiea, granting him vast omniscience over his domain. If his heart is ever stopped, he can use a precise electric current to restart it as a form of defibrillation, effectively resurrecting himself from a state of cardiac arrest. His ultimate attack, Raigo, involves using the Ark Maxim to create a massive, thundercloud-filled sphere that he can drop onto an island with enough force to completely annihilate it. The only known natural counter to his powers is rubber, a complete electrical insulator, which makes the Gomu Gomu No Mi user Monkey D. Luffy his one true nemesis.
