Gaomon is the Digimon partner of Thomas H. Norstein, serving as one of the main protagonist Digimon in the series. As a Rookie-level, Data-attribute Beast Digimon, his appearance resembles a small, bipedal blue Akita dog. He is distinguished by his pointed, curling ears, white fur accents on his muzzle and underbelly, and a distinctive linear mark on his forehead. He always wears a pair of large red boxing gloves and a dark red scarf tied around his head, accessories that reflect his disciplined fighting style.

Gaomon's defining characteristic is his unwavering loyalty and obedience to his human partner, Thomas. He speaks very little, and his dialogue frequently consists of formal, respectful acknowledgements of Thomas's commands, such as "Sir, yes sir" in the English adaptation or "Yes master" in the original Japanese version. His personality is calm, cool, collected, and quiet, presenting a stoic and dedicated warrior who prefers calculated actions over impulsive reactions. Gaomon trusts Thomas's strategic judgment completely and executes missions based on his partner's data and theories, which creates an effective, if initially rigid, partnership. Despite his reserved nature, he possesses a lesser-known and very specific character trait: he becomes embarrassed and blushes uncontrollably in the presence of young girls who remark on how cute he looks. He also dislikes being called a dog, though he shows more patience with this insult when it comes from children.

Gaomon's role within the story is that of a key combatant for the Digital Accident Tactics Squad (DATS). He supports Thomas in missions to deal with Digimon that enter the human world. His relationship with Thomas is the most formal among the main human-Digimon pairs; it is a master-servant dynamic rather than one of equals or close friends. Not much is revealed about the background of how they first met. While he rarely expresses his own opinions, his actions reveal a protective instinct for those who are younger or weaker than himself. He initially shares a rivalrous relationship with Marcus Damon's partner, Agumon, but the two eventually settle their differences and learn to fight effectively as a team.

Over the course of the series, Gaomon undergoes significant development, primarily reflected in his increasing power and the deepening of his bond with Thomas. A pivotal moment occurs when Thomas is trapped in a nightmare spell that forces him to relive the trauma of his mother's death. By breaking free of this spell, Thomas awakens his DigiSoul, allowing Gaomon to digivolve for the first time to his Ultimate form, MachGaogamon, to defeat MetalPhantomon. This event marks a major step in their partnership. Later, Gaomon achieves his Mega form, MirageGaogamon, followed by the even more powerful Burst Mode. This ultimate evolution is first unlocked by Thomas's powerful DigiSoul, fueled by his desire to protect his sister, Relena, granting Gaomon the strength to defeat the powerful Royal Knight, LordKnightmon.

In combat, Gaomon is a fast and agile fighter who specializes in "hit and away" tactics, utilizing his powerful leg strength for swift, close-range attacks. As a Rookie, his signature techniques include the Rolling Upper, where he rolls into the opponent's chest; the Double Backhand, a spinning strike; and Gao Rush, a rapid barrage of high-speed punches. As he digivolves, his abilities become more devastating. As the Champion-level Gaogamon, he can fire a powerful vortex of wind from his mouth called Spiral Blow. In his Ultimate form, MachGaogamon, he gains cyborg enhancements and can unleash ultrasonic waves with his Howling Cannon. As the Mega-level MirageGaogamon, he is clad in Chrome Digizoid armor and possesses incredible speed, with attacks including the planet-level Full Moon Blaster. In his final MirageGaogamon Burst Mode, he can unleash the tremendously powerful Meteor Shackle, striking opponents with a sphere of planetary energy.
