Daigo Nishijima serves as a Grade 2 Management Officer within the Information Strategy Section of the Incorporated Administrative Agency, National Data Processing Bureau. He also works part-time as a calligraphy teacher and assistant homeroom teacher for Taichi Kamiya's class at Tsukishima General High School. His appearance features short greenish-black hair and brown eyes, often dressed in a beige shirt with a light blue star on the chest, brown shorts, pink slippers with white soles, and a white coat rolled up to the elbows featuring pockets at each waist side and one on the left chest. During official duties, he wears a black suit and tie over a white button-up shirt.
He was one of the original five DigiDestined children, partnered with Bearmon, who digivolved into LoaderLiomon. In the decisive battle against the Dark Masters, Daigo initially despaired despite teammate Maki Himekawa's urging. When Homeostasis possessed Maki to force their Digimon's digivolution, all partners except Maki's Megadramon evolved into the Harmonious Ones. Megadramon sacrificed itself to defeat the Dark Masters, leaving Daigo with lasting survivor's guilt. His partner LoaderLiomon became Baihumon, the Harmonious One of the West – aligning with his surname "Nishijima" (west island). His first name "Daigo" (combining "large" and "my") reflects his connection to Baihumon's power and his role as the group's goggle-wearing leader.
Later attending university with Maki, Daigo tried to dissuade her obsession with rebooting the Digital World to revive her deceased partner Tapirmon (previously Megadramon). He awkwardly proposed becoming her "new partner," initiating a romantic relationship that eventually ended. Both joined the National Data Processing Bureau, with Maki holding a higher rank. Daigo's empathy towards newer DigiDestined stemmed partly from guilt over Maki's unresolved trauma and his desire to prevent similar suffering.
In 2005, Daigo monitored the current DigiDestined undercover at their school. He approached Taichi Kamiya about career planning, encouraging his dreams while inadvertently discussing Digimon. When infected Digimon appeared in Tokyo, he provided logistical support, like transporting Taichi to confront Kuwagamon. He later revealed his government role officially, briefing the group on distortions between worlds and the infected Digimon threat. He frequently clashed with Maki over her secrecy regarding Meicoomon's infection link and withheld information about the missing DigiDestined (Davis, Yolei, Cody, Ken).
Daigo discovered Maki's alliance with King Drasil and her orchestration of the Digital World's reboot. Hackmon, an agent of Homeostasis, informed him that Meicoomon (codenamed "Libra") contained a fragment of Apocalymon's data and could destroy both worlds if corrupted. Despite Hackmon's warnings and Homeostasis's intervention, Daigo helped shelter the persecuted DigiDestined and pursued them into the Digital World during Jesmon's confrontation with Raguelmon. After battling Alphamon, Daigo and Taichi fell into a fissure, landing in an underground facility.
There, Daigo found the missing DigiDestined and the real Gennai in life-support pods. Dark Gennai revealed their capture resulted from uncovering King Drasil's plans, then deactivated the pods and triggered the facility's self-destruction. With only one escape capsule available and himself mortally wounded from the fall, Daigo deceived Taichi into entering the capsule. He sacrificed himself to ensure Taichi and the others escaped, offering final advice about striving for the future as the facility exploded.
Daigo's personality is characterized by warmth, friendliness, and compassion. He consistently prioritized easing burdens for others, contrasting with Maki's detached professionalism. This empathy, fueled by unresolved guilt over Megadramon's death, drove his protective stance toward the newer DigiDestined. His actions reflected a deep sense of responsibility, culminating in his choice to safeguard their future at the cost of his own life.
