Description
Ivan Judanovich, known by the title Ataman signifying "Cossack leader," was born into a Cossack family during the Soviet era. Following the Soviet Union's dissolution, he rose to prominence as a significant political figure in one region of the newly formed Eastern Slav Republic. This region pursued independence due to irreconcilable socio-economic differences with the republic's government. Judanovich led this movement, accepting the title Ataman after the government offered regional autonomy in exchange for a ceasefire, temporarily halting unrest.
Years later, the discovery of substantial oil reserves within the autonomous region ignited renewed conflict. Government oligarchs sought control of these resources, triggering a full-scale civil war in 2006. Judanovich commanded the anti-government rebel forces, aiming to overthrow President Svetlana Belikova and capture the capital, Holigrad. The rebels faced severe disadvantages against the oligarch-funded government military.
As government forces gained the upper hand, Judanovich sanctioned the use of black-market Bio-Organic Weapons (B.O.W.s), specifically Licker Betas, to counter their superior strength. Unbeknownst to him and the Council of Elders coordinating rebel strategy, Yakovlev Security—a front company controlled by Belikova’s government—supplied these B.O.W.s. The Lickers carried a synthetic strain of the Las Plagas parasite, modified to establish a master-slave relationship. This allowed a human host implanted with the dominant strain to control the creatures via ultra-high-frequency sound waves.
Judanovich later agreed to implant himself with the dominant strain to command the Lickers directly. However, the parasite contained a deliberate genetic flaw engineered by Belikova’s scientists. It caused the host's gradual regression into a Ganado—a mindless, parasite-controlled entity—while ensuring the Plagas would eventually spread among all rebels. Belikova intended this trap to eliminate the resistance from within and bolster her government's international standing by "defeating" a bioterror threat.
The synthetic Plagas accelerated Judanovich's physical deterioration. Violent coughing fits wracked him, loss of mobility forced reliance on rebels like Alexander "Sasha" Kozachenko (Buddy), and episodes occurred where the parasite partially overwhelmed his nervous system, causing his eyes to glow red and his skin to grey. Despite these symptoms, he retained intermittent control over his faculties.
In a final bid for victory, Judanovich ordered an assault on Holigrad’s presidential palace using the Lickers. During this operation, his condition worsened drastically. After a government attack on a rebel hideout, Judanovich fully transformed into a Ganado, attacking nearby soldiers. He briefly regained consciousness and, recognizing his impending permanent mutation, implored Buddy to euthanize him to preserve his humanity and ensure the rebellion continued. Buddy complied, shooting him multiple times.
Before dying, Judanovich disclosed the location of remaining synthetic Plagas samples to Buddy, urging him to lead the rebels. This act directly influenced Buddy’s subsequent decision to implant himself with the parasite and launch the final attack on the presidential palace.
