Isami Kondo commands the Shinsengumi, a special police force active in Kyoto during the Bakumatsu period. Born Miyagawa Katsugoro to a peasant family in Tama, Musashi province, he was adopted by Kondo Shusuke, the third master of the Tennen Rishin Ryu sword style, ultimately succeeding him as its fourth-generation master. This swordsmanship expertise underpins his leadership of the Shinsengumi. Portrayed as a charismatic and principled leader, he deeply values loyalty and prioritizes his men's welfare. His leadership exhibits strong responsibility and paternal care, securing him profound respect. He extends compassion to Chizuru Yukimura upon learning her identity and connection to the sought-after doctor Kodo Yukimura, offering her protection within the Shinsengumi instead of expelling her. A defining moment unfolds during the Shinsengumi's retreat after military defeats. Acknowledging the strategic need to ensure the group's survival, especially for his deputy Toshizo Hijikata, he deliberately chooses to stay behind and surrender to enemy forces. This self-sacrifice aims to buy time for the remaining members to escape safely to Aizu. His capture results in execution by beheading. His death deeply impacts the Shinsengumi, particularly Hijikata, marking a significant turning point in the group's history. His relationship with Hijikata Toshizo is especially significant. Their bond originated when Kondo, traveling to teach swordsmanship, met Hijikata through his brother-in-law, Sato Hikogoro. Hijikata later became his disciple at the Shieikan dojo, forging a lifelong close friendship. Within the Shinsengumi, Kondo embodied stability and honor, often contrasted with Hijikata's stricter, more tactical approach. His absence creates a substantial leadership void after his death. Kondo's legacy within the Shinsengumi narrative remains that of a foundational figure; his ideals and sacrifice continue to shape the group's actions and motivations long after his demise.
