Gakushuu attends Nanyo Academy as one of its four strongest combatants, collectively called the Big Four. He possesses a muscular physique, spiky black hair, and wears the school uniform: a light brown vest, button-up shirt, and black pants. His personality blends a fierce love for fighting with demonstrated integrity, such as protecting strangers from harassment.
In the manga’s Introductory Arc, he challenges Hakufu Sonsaku, initially overpowering her by slamming her into a wall, but her latent muscle relaxant technique incapacitates him. After battling random fighters, he suffers a decisive knockout defeat from Shimei Ryomou’s full moon choke hold. During the Big Four Arc, he confronts Genpou Saji about his manipulations, warning that overconfidence invites downfall, and later updates the hospitalized Koukin Shuuyu on Hakufu-related events after Saji defeats Koukin. In the Hakufu's Broken Spirit Arc, Gakushuu dismisses Ryomou’s victory over Shimei as a fluke during a rooftop talk with Saji.
In the *Ikkitousen* anime, Gakushuu absorbs Hakufu’s kick but suffers impaired movement, then sustains severe arm injuries when Ryomou overwhelms him. He instructs Koukin and Hakufu to join the Great Fighters Tournament but loses his first match to dirty tactics. Tracking Kouha Kannei to a boiler room expecting Enjutsu, he is knocked unconscious by Saji. He awakens restrained beside Koukin as Saji reveals his schemes and manipulation of Kannei. Later, chained at a cliff, he aids in stopping Saji’s suicide after Hakufu’s possession by Chuuei Toutaku ends.
In *Ikkitousen: Dragon Destiny*, Gakushuu intercepts Kakouen’s assault on Nanyo Academy, stalling her until she notes Ryomou’s absence. At a Big Four meeting, he learns Hakufu is the "conqueror from the West" and hears Saji disclose Seito’s role in hostilities with Kyosho. During the Battle of Red Cliffs, he duels Koumei Jokou, matching then overpowering him by slamming him against a steel girder. While working a job, he assaults a male customer harassing a woman, nearly getting fired.
Gakushuu’s skills rank him among Nanyo’s elite, though he falters against top-tier opponents like Ryomou. His moral compass emerges when defending others, contrasting his otherwise combat-centric demeanor.
