Description
Janice Quatlane, once an archaeology student, reinvented herself as a celebrated opera singer. Her story intertwines with Melina Whistler, a friend whose tragic death propelled Janice into becoming an unwitting participant in Oswald Whistler’s Detragan experiments. This machine, designed to transfer memories and personalities, unexpectedly succeeded when Janice concealed her own consciousness, permitting Melina’s psyche to dominate her body. Under Melina’s influence, Janice maneuvered events to enlist Layton’s aid in thwarting Oswald’s dangerous ambitions.

Janice’s attire reflects her dual journey: a lavender dress and pecan-brown Mary Jane heels paired with Melina’s purple pendant—a token of their bond. Onstage, she embodies regality in a white-and-gold gown and crown, later adopting a white dress with a short blue jacket as events unfold. The pendant remains a tangible thread to Melina’s legacy.

The climax sees Melina voluntarily surrendering control, restoring Janice’s autonomy. Post-conflict, Janice reclaims her life, later appearing at Layton’s office, signaling her resilience. Her self-sacrifice underscores a profound loyalty to Melina and a commitment to justice.

Notably 23 during these events—Melina perished at 22—Janice’s name, meaning “God is gracious,” and her opera gown, modeled after Edmund Blair Leighton’s *The Accolade*, add depth to her lore. A referenced record in *Professor Layton and the Last Specter* hints at her enduring fame as a diva, extending her narrative beyond immediate events.
