Description
Rui Tachibana, a reserved and introverted Virgo born on September 5, navigates high school with emotional detachment and blunt communication, shaped by her upbringing in a single-parent home. Early domestic responsibilities—necessitated by her career-driven mother and cooking-averse older sister, Hina—cultivate her culinary expertise. Her quiet world revolves around reading, documentaries, and traditional Japanese music, juxtaposed with fears of thunderstorms, horror, and slugs.

A fateful mixer leads to a one-night stand with classmate Natsuo Fujii, unaware their parents’ impending remarriage will soon make them step-siblings. Initially dismissing romance, she slowly unravels her guarded heart, forging a clandestine bond with Natsuo that evolves into a committed partnership. Together, they nurture each other’s ambitions: his writing and her culinary aspirations, which propel her to train under her estranged father at his Italian restaurant before departing for New York.

Distance strains their relationship as Natsuo’s writer’s block leaves him reliant on others, a dynamic Rui views as mutual dependence. Unable to support him, she severs their romance, reverting to siblings. Later, stress-induced anosmia halts her career, driving her to reconnect with Natsuo in New York. Their reconciliation results in pregnancy, but marriage plans fracture when Hina sacrifices herself to thwart an assailant, falling into a coma. Discovering Hina’s enduring love for Natsuo, Rui relinquishes her claim, choosing co-parenting their daughter, Haruka, while sustaining a partnership without matrimony.

Initially envious of Hina’s sociability, she grows to admire her sister’s resilience, eventually urging Natsuo to prioritize Hina’s care. Guided by friends like Momo Kashiwabara, she sheds emotional isolation, embracing vulnerability through Natsuo’s kindness. Professionally, she ascends as a chef, balancing motherhood and career, while imparting to Haruka the value of familial bonds—including Hina’s silent sacrifices. Her journey weaves independence with fragility, marked by love, sacrifice, and the quiet strength of self-reinvention.
