Description
Kisuke Urahara is the former captain of the 12th Division in the Gotei 13 and the founder of the Soul Reaper Research and Development Institute. Prior to his captaincy, he grew up at the Shihōin mansion alongside his childhood friends Yoruichi Shihōin and Tessai Tsukabishi. He eventually joined the Gotei 13, rising to become the 3rd Seat of the 2nd Division, where he also commanded the Detention Unit of the Onmitsukidō. Roughly 110 years before the main storyline, Yoruichi recommended him to replace Kirio Hikifune as captain of the 12th Division after her promotion to the Royal Guard. Despite initial nervousness and self-doubt, he cultivated the resolve to take on the role and formally established the research institute, recruiting Mayuri Kurotsuchi from the Nest of Maggots to serve as his vice-president.
Urahara presents a deceptively simple exterior, owning a small convenience store in Karakura Town called the Urahara Shop, which doubles as a supplier of Soul Reaper items under the guise of a candy shop. He is assisted in running the shop by his employees Tessai, as well as the young Jinta Hanakari and Ururu Tsumugiya. He is almost always seen wearing a traditional striped bucket hat and wooden sandals, a combination that has earned him the nickname "Mr. Hat-and-Clogs." In personality, he is generally laid-back and jovial, often speaking in a polite but sarcastic manner. He once described himself as a "handsome, perverted businessman." Despite his carefree attitude, he can become absolutely serious and driven when the situation demands it. Yoruichi notes that he tends to go over the top with whatever he becomes passionate about. He often knows more than he reveals and prefers to operate from the shadows, acting as a catalyst who sets events in motion rather than intervening directly. While he can be duplicitous in how he offers aid, his actions are consistently guided by what he perceives as the greater good.
Urahara's motivations are deeply rooted in a sense of responsibility and a desire to atone for past mistakes. He was framed by Sōsuke Aizen for conducting taboo Hollowfication experiments on several Soul Reapers, which resulted in the creation of the Visored. While he was conducting his own secret research into breaking the barrier between Soul Reapers and Hollows with an artifact called the Hōgyoku, Aizen built upon this foundation. Although Urahara had grown disturbed by his project and tried to abandon it, the damage was done. He was sentenced to exile by Central 46 for his role, but Yoruichi helped him, Tessai, and the Hollowfied victims escape to the Human World. Carrying this guilt, he dedicated himself to cleaning up the mess he had inadvertently helped create. This included saving Masaki Kurosaki from Hollowfication, an act that allowed for the eventual birth of Ichigo Kurosaki, whom Urahara would later train to become a Soul Reaper. Ultimately, he seeks to counter the threat posed by Aizen and protect the balance of the worlds.
Throughout the story, Urahara serves as a mentor, strategist, and invaluable ally to Ichigo and his friends. He is responsible for giving Rukia Kuchiki a special gigai that concealed the Hōgyoku, and when her powers are transferred to Ichigo, he helps train the young substitute Soul Reaper to regain his strength and achieve Bankai in an incredibly short time. He orchestrates the mission to rescue Rukia from Soul Society and later provides crucial support during the Arrancar arc, fighting the Espada Yammy on two occasions and eventually joining the final battle against Aizen in Karakura Town. He is one of the few individuals who can match Aizen’s intellect, and it is his advanced Kidō spell that finally seals the rogue captain after Ichigo weakens him. During the Thousand-Year Blood War, Urahara analyzes the Quincies' ability to steal Bankai, devises countermeasures, and creates a cannon to transport allies to the Soul King Palace, continuing to play a pivotal role in the defense of Soul Society.
His key relationships are defined by deep history and mutual respect. He shares an unbreakable bond with Yoruichi Shihōin, who has been his closest friend and partner since childhood and who risked everything to save him from execution. He is also a close ally of Ichigo's father, Isshin Kurosaki, assisting him in saving Masaki. His relationship with Ichigo is that of a cryptic but effective teacher, pushing him to unlock his potential while keeping his own true motives and power level hidden. His former lieutenant, Hiyori Sarugaki, had a contentious but ultimately loyal relationship with him. Even his rival in scientific pursuit, Mayuri Kurotsuchi, owes his freedom and position to Urahara, though Mayuri constantly seeks to surpass the man he succeeded as captain.
In terms of development, the character shows a shift from a more earnest and perhaps uncertain figure when he first became a captain to the inscrutable and perpetually prepared schemer seen in the present. The trauma of his exile and the guilt over the Hōgyoku have made him more cautious and indirect, preferring to work through proxies like Ichigo to avoid repeating past mistakes. His resolve, however, has only hardened over a century of exile, and he proves willing to take desperate measures and fight ruthlessly when the situation calls for it.
Urahara is an exceptionally powerful and skilled fighter. His Zanpakutō is named Benihime, meaning Crimson Princess, and its Shikai command is "Awaken." In its Shikai form, Benihime's blade widens and gains a crimson ribbon. Its abilities include an offensive energy blast and a blood-red defensive shield. His Bankai is called Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame. When unleashed, it allows him to restructure and remodel anything his Zanpakutō touches within its effective range. This can be used to inflict massive damage on an opponent, repair his own injuries, or alter the environment to create traps and pathways. Beyond his Zanpakutō, Urahara is a master of all four main Shinigami combat styles. He is a highly skilled swordsman, proficient in hand-to-hand combat, and possesses incredible speed with Shunpo. Most notably, he is a master of Kidō, capable of using high-level spells from both the Hadō (destruction) and Bakudō (binding) categories without incantations. His intellect is arguably his greatest weapon, as he is considered one of the most brilliant minds in the series, capable of planning for countless contingencies and developing revolutionary inventions like the Hōgyoku and the Tenshintai, the device used to forcibly materialize a Zanpakutō spirit for Bankai training.
