Erina Pendleton originates from Victorian England, first appearing as a young girl living in the same town as Jonathan Joestar. Their initial encounter happens when Jonathan intervenes to rescue her from bullies, an act that leaves a lasting impression even though he is physically overwhelmed. This sparks her interest in him and his aspiration to become a gentleman. She later returns a handkerchief he dropped during the fight, accompanied by a gift of grapes, marking the beginning of their connection. She becomes Jonathan’s girlfriend and his primary source of comfort after his adopted brother, Dio Brando, turns others against him. Dio forcibly kisses Erina to steal her first kiss and humiliate her. In defiance, she immediately washes her mouth with water from a muddy puddle, declaring that even dirty water was cleaner than Dio. Dio strikes her in response. The shame and trauma from this incident lead her to avoid Jonathan, and she moves to India with her father. Seven years later, Erina returns to England and works as a nurse at a hospital where her father is stationed. She is reunited with Jonathan when he is admitted with severe injuries from a confrontation with Dio and the fire that destroyed the Joestar mansion. She tends to his wounds with relentless devotion, her fingers becoming cracked and bruised, and she eventually faints from exhaustion. Observers note her stern demeanor as she insists on no interruptions during his care. After Jonathan’s recovery and Dio’s defeat at Windknight’s Lot, Erina and Jonathan marry. They embark on a honeymoon voyage to America, which is cut short when Dio attacks the ship. Jonathan is mortally wounded. As the ship sinks, he ensures Erina’s escape by convincing her to protect an orphaned infant whose parents were killed. He places them both inside Dio’s coffin, which serves as a makeshift lifeboat. She is later rescued near the Canary Islands and learns she is pregnant with Jonathan’s child. Erina gives birth to their son, George Joestar II. She ensures the orphaned infant girl she saved, Lisa Lisa, is raised by Straizo, a friend of Will Anthonio Zeppeli. After her son George is killed and her daughter-in-law Elizabeth is forced into hiding, Erina becomes the guardian of her grandson, Joseph Joestar, raising him with a strict but caring demeanor. In her later years, Erina moves to New York City with Joseph. Though in her seventies, she retains a youthful appearance, wears glasses, and shows few wrinkles. Her personality remains characterized by grace, wisdom, and a commanding presence that tempers Joseph’s impulsive nature. Demonstrating a progressive mindset, she readily welcomes and befriends Smokey Brown, a young African-American boy, disregarding the racial prejudices of the time. She works as a school teacher, teaching English until her death in 1950 at the age of 81, surrounded by family and friends. A non-canon source describes an alternate narrative where Erina survives the shipwreck with the infant Lisa Lisa and Dio’s disembodied head. In this version, Dio keeps them alive by feeding them fish in exchange for her blood, and she is depicted as having kept the head of her husband, Jonathan, after his body was taken by Dio. Erina is consistently portrayed as fair-skinned with blonde hair, often kept in a ponytail, and light blue eyes in her youth. In old age, her hair turns gray and she wears glasses. Her personality embodies Victorian femininity—polite, gentle, sweet, and caring—yet beneath this lies a resilient and strong-willed individual capable of defiance, profound devotion, and quiet command, traits that endure throughout her life.
