Description
Miaka Yûki is a fifteen-year-old junior high school student from Tokyo, Japan, living with her mother and older brother, Keisuke Yuuki. Her parents are divorced, and this situation contributes to a strained relationship with her mother, who pressures her to excel academically and gain admission to the prestigious Jonan Academy. This dynamic fuels Miaka's strong desire to please her mother, often overriding her own wishes, such as her preference to attend Yotsubadai High School. In contrast, her relationship with her brother Keisuke is supportive; he becomes a principal source of aid and believes in her experiences despite initial skepticism.
Her personality is outgoing, optimistic, and guileless. She is amiable, generous, and caring, often demonstrating quick forgiveness and a tendency to see the good in people. This trusting and naïve nature sometimes leads her into dangerous situations but also inspires strong loyalty. A pronounced weakness is her gluttony, as she maintains a constant and enthusiastic interest in food. She is an avid anime fan and prone to daydreaming. Despite her generally unsophisticated demeanor, she can exhibit unexpected insight and courage when necessary. A darker aspect of her personality emerged when a shadow-self manifested, expressing hidden desires and causing turmoil, though she ultimately overcame this internal challenge.
Her story begins when she and her best friend, Yui Hongo, discover a book titled "The Universe of the Four Gods" at the National Library. Reading it transports them to a world resembling ancient China. While Yui returns almost immediately, Miaka remains and is identified as the Priestess of Suzaku for the kingdom of Konan. She initially accepts this role to summon Suzaku and wish to attend the same high school as Yui. Her motivations evolve after she falls in love with Tamahome, one of the seven Celestial Warriors of Suzaku sworn to protect her. Her journey focuses on gathering all seven warriors to summon Suzaku, a path marked by challenges, rivalries, and emotional turmoil after Yui becomes the antagonistic Priestess of Seiryuu.
Throughout her quest, Miaka demonstrates deep loyalty to the people of the book's world, never treating them as fictional. The deaths of her Celestial Warriors, particularly Nuriko and Hotohori, affect her profoundly. Her relationship with Tamahome becomes her central driving force, though her wishes sometimes have unintended consequences; an early wish to be with him "no matter how" is later reflected upon as potentially tragic. When she finally summons Suzaku, her three wishes are selfless. Her first wish frees Yui from the control of Seiryuu. Her second wish seals Seiryuu away to stop the destruction. For her third wish, she sacrifices her own happiness with Tamahome to restore the world damaged by the celestial conflict, an act noted by others as completely selfless.
After these events, Tamahome is reincarnated in Miaka's world as Taka Sukunami. They reunite, eventually marry, and have a son named Hikari. In a later continuation, she becomes the victim of a younger student named Mayo, who is envious of Miaka's relationship with Taka. Mayo enters the book world and causes havoc, resulting in Miaka falling into a coma. While unconscious, Miaka sends her unborn child's spirit into Mayo to create a connection and save the world inside the book. She later uses her connection to Suzaku to help defeat a false god and seal it away, resolving the conflict. She awakens from the coma and later gives birth to her son.
As the Priestess of Suzaku, Miaka can summon the god once her seven Celestial Warriors are gathered. Her body is protected by a divine barrier of red light, a power bestowed by Suzaku. She also demonstrates reflexes considered inhuman by those who witness them.
