Description
Miaka Yuki is a fifteen-year-old girl from Tokyo who lives with her mother and older brother, Keisuke Yuuki, following her parents' divorce. Her relationship with her mother is strained due to intense academic pressure, specifically the expectation that Miaka test into the elite Jonan Academy. Though she personally wishes to attend Yotsubadai High School with her best friend, Miaka continually strives for her mother's approval, often setting aside her own aspirations. In contrast, her brother Keisuke offers unwavering support, eventually becoming her strongest ally outside the book's world.

She has long auburn hair with a full fringe and brown eyes, standing 158 cm tall and weighing 48 kg. In the real world, she is almost always seen in her school uniform: a white blouse, brown jacket, matching skirt, light-blue ribbon, white socks, and black Mary Jane shoes. Inside the Universe of the Four Gods, she frequently wears traditional Chinese attire. As the Priestess of Suzaku, she dons a red ceremonial robe and veil, her hair adorned with a headdress.

Outgoing, optimistic, and amiable, Miaka is also naive, guileless, and deeply sentimental. She is generous and caring, quick to forgive, and perceives herself as a considerate person who looks for the good in everyone. Though unassuming and unsophisticated, she can be magnanimous and courageous. A significant weakness is her gluttony; she eats constantly and shows interest in all types of food. She is also an avid anime fan and often imitates various characters. Her trusting nature sometimes leads her into peril, though she is almost always protected by others. A deeper conflict surfaces when her shadow-self emerges, expressing a desire to remain in the book world and love Hotohori, but Miaka proves stronger than these dark impulses.

Her story begins when she and her best friend, Yui Hongo, discover a mysterious book titled *The Universe of the Four Gods* in the National Library. Reading it transports them into a universe resembling ancient China. Yui is sent back almost immediately, but Miaka remains and is identified as the Priestess of Suzaku for the kingdom of Konan. Her destiny is to gather the seven Celestial Warriors of the god Suzaku to summon the deity and obtain three wishes. Initially, she wishes to pass her exams and attend high school with Yui, but this changes after she falls in love with the Celestial Warrior Tamahome.

As Priestess, she forges a strong, unbreakable bond with her Celestial Warriors, built on love and trust. Unlike Yui, who later becomes the Priestess of Seiryuu and views the world’s inhabitants as fictional, Miaka treats everyone as real people and grows deeply devoted to both worlds. The deaths of warriors like Nuriko and Hotohori affect her profoundly. Her journey is marked by self-sacrifice and a reckless tendency to intervene, driven by a powerful desire to protect others despite her own limitations.

Her actions sometimes yield unintended consequences due to her lack of perception. For example, a wish to be with Tamahome "no matter how it's done" could have had dire consequences had Suzaku been summoned. Her concern for her friendship with Yui remains a driving force throughout her quest, even as they become rivals.

Upon summoning Suzaku, her three wishes are ultimately selfless. Her first wish frees Yui from the god Seiryuu. Her second seals Seiryuu away, stripping the enemy general Nakago of his powers. Her third and final wish restores the world to normal, sacrificing her chance to be with Tamahome for the greater good. Tamahome is later reincarnated in the real world as Taka Sukunami, and they are eventually reunited.

In the sequel OVA *Fushigi Yûgi: Eikoden*, Miaka is married to Taka Sukunami and is the mother of a son named Hikari. During these events, she temporarily falls into a coma, and another character, Mayo, causes havoc in her place as the Priestess of Suzaku. Her clothing shifts to simpler dresses, reflecting her role as a wife and mother.

As the Priestess, she possesses certain abilities, including a protection barrier granted by Suzaku. She also exhibits inhuman reflexes, which she can use whether consciously or not.
