Description
Chrollo Lucilfer hails from Meteor City, a junkyard settlement whose residents exist outside official records. Even as a child in Meteor City, he emerged as a natural leader, forming a dubbing group with Franklin, Shalnark, Uvogin, Machi, Phinks, Feitan, Pakunoda, Sarasa, and Sheila. The horrific discovery of Sarasa's mutilated corpse, murdered by unknown assailants, became a defining tragedy for Chrollo. Fueled by a vow of vengeance, he later established the Phantom Troupe roughly three years afterward alongside six fellow Meteor City natives: Franklin, Uvogin, Machi, Pakunoda, Feitan, Nobunaga, and Shalnark. The group ultimately grew to thirteen members, with Chrollo designated as member #0 and leader.

His appearance features black hair, grey eyes, a distinctive cross-shaped tattoo on his forehead, and orb-shaped earrings. He typically wears a dark purple coat with white fur trim, its back adorned with a golden St. Peter’s Cross featuring devil horns. The location of his Phantom Troupe spider tattoo remains unrevealed in the manga, though the 1999 anime adaptation placed it on his right arm without the number zero.

Chrollo's personality is marked by calmness, charisma, and sharp strategic intelligence, enabling him to command the volatile Phantom Troupe. He prioritizes the Spider's survival above his own life, viewing the leader as expendable for the group's continuity. Despite a capacity for empathy towards fallen comrades – shedding tears for Uvogin and orchestrating a mafia massacre as his requiem – Chrollo operates with ruthless pragmatism. He committed atrocities like the Kurta Clan massacre and displays apathy towards enemies, employing brutal Nen abilities without remorse. His manipulative nature surfaces in schemes like befriending Neon Nostrade solely to steal her fortune-telling Nen ability, showcasing expert acting skills.

Chrollo’s Nen specialization, "Skill Hunter," allows him to steal others' abilities by fulfilling strict conditions: witnessing the ability firsthand, questioning the user about it, and ensuring the original user remains alive (barring specific exceptions). Stolen abilities are stored within his conjured book, "Bandit’s Secret," which must be open to the corresponding page during use. This power unlocks diverse combat possibilities but restricts simultaneous ability deployment.

During the Yorknew City arc, Chrollo led the Phantom Troupe in raiding the mafia’s underground auction. Following Uvogin’s capture and death at Kurapika’s hands, Chrollo exploited Neon Nostrade to steal her ability and orchestrated a city-wide massacre. Confronted by Silva and Zeno Zoldyck, he nearly perished before their contract dissolved due to the Ten Dons’ assassination. Kurapika subsequently captured Chrollo, using "Chain Jail" to seal his Nen. This restriction was later lifted through unknown means, restoring his powers.

In the Heavens Arena arc, Chrollo battled Hisoka with a meticulously crafted strategy, employing stolen abilities like "Order Stamp" and "Black Voice" to control an audience of puppets. He overwhelmed Hisoka, resulting in Hisoka’s temporary death. Chrollo later resumed leadership of the Phantom Troupe but faced retaliation from Hisoka, who assassinated members Kortopi and Shalnark. This provoked Chrollo’s vow to kill Hisoka on sight.

Most recently, Chrollo boarded the Black Whale as part of the Succession War arc. His objectives remain undisclosed, but he operates alongside the Troupe during the voyage to the Dark Continent.
