Rōjūrō Ōtoribashi, known as Rose, serves as Captain of the Gotei 13's 3rd Division. He has distinctive purple eyes and long, wavy blond hair, often maintaining a bored expression. His attire typically consists of a black suit with a thigh-length jacket over a white frilled shirt featuring large cuffs and a high collar, frequently left untucked. Over a century ago during his initial captaincy, he wore the standard Shinigami shihakushō with a sleeveless captain's haori over a frilled collared shirt, his hair straighter and tied with a small black ribbon. After reinstatement, he returned to Shinigami attire, his hair shorter, slicked back, with a single lock falling forward.
Promoted to captain 112 years ago, Rose joined Shinji Hirako, Love Aikawa, Hachigen Ushōda, and Lisa Yadōmaru nine years later to investigate disappearances in Rukongai and Captain Kensei Muguruma's squad. He encountered a Hollowfied Kensei and fought him before being ambushed by a Hollowfied Mashiro Kuna. This incident was orchestrated by Sōsuke Aizen and Kaname Tōsen, subjecting Rose and the others to Hollowfication experiments. Kisuke Urahara intervened unsuccessfully. Sentenced to execution by Central 46 as Hollows, they were rescued by Yoruichi Shihōin. Urahara provided Reiatsu-blocking Gigai, enabling their escape to the Human World where they became the Visored.
During exile in the Human World with fellow Visored, Rose first appeared when Ichigo Kurosaki sought their aid to control his inner Hollow. Observing Ichigo's training, he often engaged in casual activities like discussing music releases or reading manga with Love and Lisa. He displayed concern for comrades, noting Hachigen's happiness upon meeting Orihime Inoue and commenting on the "growing family" when Ichigo and Orihime joined. He showed irritation at spoiled manga plots.
Rose later returned to Soul Society and was reinstated as 3rd Division Captain before the Quincy invasion. His lieutenant, Izuru Kira, inspired his music; Rose expressed intent to mourn Kira's potential death with his guitar. During the Wandenreich's Thousand-Year Blood War assault, Rose confronted Stern Ritter "U" NaNaNa Najahkoop. His division suffered heavy losses, burdening him emotionally while he maintained squad morale. His Bankai, like other captains', was stolen by Sternritter using specialized medallions, hindering his combat effectiveness.
His Zanpakutō is Kinshara. Its Shikai release command, "Play," transforms it into an energy whip capable of sound-based attacks. Techniques include "Arpeggio," generating destructive sound waves, and "Kinshara Sonatina," creating illusions through music. His Bankai, Kinshara Butōdan, summons spectral dancers and musicians performing lethal performances targeting opponents' senses. Explaining its mechanics during battle made it vulnerable to countermeasures.
Personality-wise, Rose presents a foppish, disinterested front, often tuning his guitar or discussing trivial matters during downtime. Despite this demeanor, he cares deeply for fellow Visored and subordinates. He values dramatic flair in battle, delivering speeches about human nature or attempting theatrical rises from rubble, sometimes drawing chastisement from Love. His wartime leadership highlighted loyalty to Soul Society as he grappled with the psychological toll of division losses and personal failures.
