Over a century ago during his initial captaincy, he wore the standard Shinigami shihakushō with a sleeveless captain's haori over a frilled collared shirt, his hair straighter and tied with a small black ribbon. After reinstatement, he returned to Shinigami attire, his hair shorter, slicked back, with a single lock falling forward. Promoted to captain 112 years ago, Rose joined Shinji Hirako, Love Aikawa, Hachigen Ushōda, and Lisa Yadōmaru nine years later to investigate disappearances in Rukongai and Captain Kensei Muguruma's squad. He encountered a Hollowfied Kensei and fought him before being ambushed by a Hollowfied Mashiro Kuna. This incident was orchestrated by Sōsuke Aizen and Kaname Tōsen, subjecting Rose and the others to Hollowfication experiments. Kisuke Urahara intervened unsuccessfully. Sentenced to execution by Central 46 as Hollows, they were rescued by Yoruichi Shihōin. Urahara provided Reiatsu-blocking Gigai, enabling their escape to the Human World where they became the Visored.
