Description
Yoshinobu Maeda commands the military unit Code Zero, rising from Lieutenant Colonel to Colonel in the Imperial Japanese Army. He is recognized as the "most powerful human" within this specialized group dedicated to vampire operations.
Maeda possesses a tall, muscular build, neatly combed brown hair, a closed gaze, and hard facial features. He lost his right arm to a vampire bite during Siberian military service, leading him to rely on a functional prosthetic limb proven effective in combat against vampires. His personality is stoic, firm, and minimally expressive, with frequent smoking noted as a habitual trait.
His background includes attending military academy alongside Tokuichi Yamagami, though their relationship remained contentious. During Siberian deployment, Maeda became the sole survivor of his unit. Rescued by Lieutenant General Sonosuke Nakajima, Maeda developed deep loyalty, viewing Nakajima as a brother and subsequently assuming responsibility for the Vajra Iron Troops Project.
Maeda maintained an engagement with Misaki, Nakajima's daughter, communicated solely through letters. This relationship ended tragically when Misaki became a vampire and chose suicide by sunlight after their first encounter.
The Great Kanto Earthquake critically injured Maeda under rubble. Facing death, he accepted blood from the vampire Defrott, triggering an emergency transformation into a vampire. This transition fractured his mind, eroding memories and sanity, leaving only an instinct to eliminate other vampires. His condition deteriorated into pure predatory instinct until he attacked Defrott and inadvertently harmed human reporter Aoi Shirase.
His military loyalty conflicted with personal morality upon discovering Nakajima's involvement in human experimentation for vampire soldiers. Despite internal turmoil, Maeda continued serving the unit until his transformation.
In his feral vampire state, Maeda confronted former subordinate Shutaro Kurusu. During their final battle, a flicker of recognition surfaced before Kurusu executed him as a necessary measure. Maeda perished at the same location where Misaki died.
