Genki Saotome, the youngest child of Dr. Saotome and younger brother to Michiru and Tatsuhito in most original Getter Robo stories, appears as an elementary school-aged boy in the 1974-1975 Getter Robo anime and Getter Robo G. He sports dark hair, black eyes, a backwards baseball cap, shirt, shorts, and sometimes a jacket. Initially critical of the Getter Team's poor teamwork, he gradually warms to them, forming a close bond with pilot Musashi Tomoe, who nicknames him "Genki-chan." He frequently observes battles alongside his sister or father during crises.
His manga counterpart in Getter Robo and Getter Robo G shares a similar appearance and role as a lively, mischievous child who lightens tense moments and teases Michiru. During conflicts with the Dinosaur Empire and Hundred Demons Empire, enemies occasionally capture him, requiring rescue. His story ends tragically when he and most Saotome Institute staff are absorbed into Getter Rays during an attack by the Andromeda Country.
The OVA Getter Robo Armageddon presents a divergent portrayal, reimagining Genki as a girl raised as a boy by Dr. Saotome for protection. Witnessing her sister Michiru's fatal combining accident and her father's murder inflicts severe psychological trauma. A subsequent nuclear attack on Shin Dragon triggers amnesia. Aware of her true identity, Benkei Kuruma adopts her, renaming her Kei Kuruma to shield her from survivors' retaliation. Thirteen years later, "Kei" is a tomboyish young woman piloting Shin Getter-2 for the new Getter Team, unaware of her past until revelations about her origins and family resurface.
The character does not appear in Getter Robo Go, Shin Getter Robo, or Getter Robo Arc.
