Description
Hokuto Sumeragi is the fraternal twin sister of Subaru Sumeragi and a central character in Tokyo Babylon. Approximately 16 years old, she has straight black hair reaching her ears and distinctive green eyes. As a member of the Sumeragi clan, she possesses spiritual abilities, though less pronounced than Subaru's, demonstrating unique spellcasting distinct from traditional onmyōji techniques.

Her personality contrasts sharply with Subaru's reserved nature; she exhibits a quick-witted, bold, and impulsive demeanor. She actively designs flamboyant matching outfits for herself and Subaru, reflecting her vibrant character. Her actions consistently prioritize Subaru's well-being, serving as his emotional support and motivator.

Hokuto harbors early suspicions about Seishiro Sakurazuka's identity as the Sakurazukamori assassin. Despite recognizing his danger, she encourages his relationship with Subaru, believing Seishiro might be the only person capable of reaching Subaru's heart. This decision later fuels her guilt following Seishiro's betrayal. When Seishiro enacts his plan to kill Subaru at the culmination of their bet—resulting in Subaru's catatonic state—Hokuto confronts him directly. She offers her life in exchange for Subaru's survival, casting a final spell tied to her death. This sacrifice breaks Subaru's catatonia and galvanizes his quest for vengeance.

Thematically, the series explores individualism. Both twins adhere to the philosophy that no one can fully comprehend another's suffering, yet Hokuto's choices stem from an unwavering commitment to protect Subaru's emotional core. Her name, "Hokuto" (北斗), references the Ursa Major constellation, complementing Subaru's name derived from the Pleiades star cluster.

Her death and its magical consequences reverberate into the series X, influencing Subaru and Seishiro's fates. Originally conceived by Clamp as a mascot character alongside Subaru—early iterations included designs inspired by a penguin named Leone—her visual evolution during the manga's serialization featured increasingly thicker line art to match the story's darker tone, particularly in her clothing designs.

The canceled Tokyo Babylon 2021 adaptation did not introduce new character developments or backstory due to its production discontinuation.
