Description
Usui Horokeu, universally called Horohoro, hails from Hokkaido's Ainu community. He is the son of Usui Lycan and older brother of Usui Pirica. His nickname originated with childhood friend Kurobe Tamiko, who struggled to pronounce his birth name. Tamiko tragically died of mountain exposure after following him, an event Horohoro blamed on himself, resulting in enduring guilt and secrecy about his past. Her spirit became his guardian ghost, Kororo, initially unaware of their connection. Horohoro entered the Shaman Fight tournament aiming to become Shaman King and create a massive butterbur field as a sanctuary for koropokkuru, the small nature spirits of Ainu lore.
Typically cheerful and good-natured, Horohoro shifts to seriousness and competitiveness in battle. He frequently clashes with teammate Tao Ren yet shows genuine concern for him, demanding others save Ren in critical moments. Deeply proud of his Ainu roots, he intensely respects nature and intervenes to protect living creatures, confronting poachers who killed a bear for sport. He displays sensitivity, prone to emotional outbursts, and harbors a romantic interest in Iron Maiden Jeanne, often blushing and greeting her enthusiastically. Despite his openness, he reacts angrily when addressed as "Horokeu," reflecting his desire to distance himself from past trauma.
His combat skills center on cryokinesis, manipulating ice and moisture through Kororo. Early techniques feature projectile attacks like "Kau Kau Priwenpe" (Renegade Hail) and large-scale ice formations like "Epittarki Upas-Horkkek" (All-Swallowing Avalanche). His primary medium is a hand-carved snowboard, enabling swift mobility and melee strikes. Later, he wields an Ikupasuy, an Ainu prayer stick gifted by Pirica, enhancing freezing speed and forming defensive or piercing ice structures. His furyoku measured 120,000 during the tournament, exceeding many peers. Advanced techniques include the "Nipopo Gauntlets," an armor-type Over Soul capable of flash-freezing and shattering opponents. As one of the Five Elemental Warriors, he gained the Spirit of Rain, generating infinite holy water.
Horohoro's journey starts with his first tournament match against Yoh Asakura at Tokyo's Sunshine 60 building. Despite a strong offensive, he loses but advances after subsequent wins. He joins Team "The Ren" with Tao Ren and Chocolove McDonnell for the team phase. Key events include traveling to China to rescue Ren from his father, En Tao, freezing En's arm during the confrontation. While traversing America, he encounters Lyserg Diethel, initially clashing but later allying. A pivotal moment occurs defending park ranger Bluebell Bloch and her bear Apollo from poachers. After Apollo is killed, Horohoro freezes the surrounding forest in rage yet spares the poachers' lives, reinforcing his belief that nature must be respected, not exploited.
During the Shaman Fight's final stages, Horohoro grows more serious in battle while remaining jovial outside it. He reconciles aspects of his past when his father, Lycan, intervenes against Brocken Meyer, revealing latent paternal concern despite earlier estrangement. His role expands as part of Sati Saigan's Five Elemental Warriors, attuning his furyoku to ice and rain. Post-tournament, he forms "Team Rebecca" with Rebecca and Silva.
Horohoro's design features distinctive Ainu-patterned attire: a white/blue ski outfit with dark shorts and boots for daily wear, and a black battle outfit with red Ainu markings ("Morew-siriki" and "Ay-us-siriki") for combat, both crafted by Pirica. He carries personal items in a backpack and uses a towel as a headband casually. Physically tall, he has silver-blue or light turquoise hair spiked when tied. He prefers practical, self-made items like trinkets sold for income. Academically weak, he scored poorly on a math test, contrasting his skilled craftsmanship.
