Description
Born Gendo Rokubungi, he endured an isolated childhood defined by emotional detachment and conflict, fostering a self-perception as unlovable. Meeting Yui Ikari transformed him through her affection, though he remained withdrawn outside their bond. After Yui vanished during an Evangelion contact experiment, Gendo abandoned their son Shinji, convinced his presence caused harm. He dedicated himself to the Human Instrumentality Project to reunite with Yui via a controlled Third Impact.

Throughout earlier Rebuild installments, Gendo maintained extreme emotional distance from Shinji, observing his suffering impassively during battles. A brief shift occurred when he attended a dinner arranged by Rei Ayanami, reflecting Yui's influence, but this outreach shattered after Gendo forcibly activated the Dummy System during the Bardiel incident, prompting Shinji to sever ties. By Evangelion 3.0, Gendo had merged his existence with metaphysical elements, wore a visor resembling SEELE's Keel Lorenz, operated from Nerv's ruins, and displayed heightened detachment.

During Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, Gendo and Kozo Fuyutsuki maneuver the Black Moon toward Antarctica to restart Evangelion Unit-13 at Second Impact's epicenter. Following Unit-13's destruction and absorption of Evangelion Unit-02 and Asuka Langley Shikinami, Gendo boards the NHG Erbsünde ship to confront WILLE. He reveals his transcendence of humanity via the Nebuchadnezzar's Key, granting immunity to conventional weapons, and explains the roles of the Impacts and clones within the Instrumentality Project.

Entering Evangelion Unit-13, Gendo confronts Shinji (piloting Unit-01) within an "Anti Universe." He manifests an "Evangelion Imaginary" (a theoretical Black Lilith entity) to initiate an "Additional Impact." During this clash, Shinji accesses Gendo's memories via a metaphysical train sequence, witnessing Gendo's isolated childhood, transformative love for Yui, profound trauma from her loss, and fear-driven abandonment of Shinji—including Gendo's regretful recollection of leaving young Shinji at a train station, now envisioning embracing him.

Confronted by this understanding, Gendo relinquishes his plan. He joins Yui within Evangelion Unit-13, and together they sacrifice themselves using the Spear of Gaius to destroy all Evangelions. This act enables Shinji's "Neon Genesis" world-restoration without Shinji's sacrifice, facilitating humanity's return to a life free from Evangelions.
