Description
Kouzou Fuyutsuki holds the position of Deputy Commander at NERV, directly subordinate to Gendo Ikari. His background lies in academia as a professor of metaphysical biology at Kyoto University, where he mentored bioengineering student Yui Ikari and developed unexpressed romantic feelings for her. He later encountered Gendo Rokubungi (later Ikari) after bailing him out from a bar fight, forming an immediate dislike.
Fuyutsuki survived Second Impact and worked as an unlicensed physician in Toyohashi's ruins in 2002. Anonymously recommended by Gendo, he joined a UN expedition to Antarctica investigating Second Impact's causes. His discoveries linked the event to SEELE, Gendo, and Yui. When confronting Gendo at the Artificial Evolution Laboratory, he was coerced into joining GEHIRN—NERV's predecessor—under SEELE's threat of elimination and his desire to reunite with Yui.
At NERV, Fuyutsuki manages administrative duties and assumes command during Gendo's absences. His leadership contrasts with Gendo's severity, exemplified when he spared Misato Katsuragi after a failed Angel operation. He engages Gendo in philosophical discussions that reveal fragments of Gendo's plans. His loyalty stems from shared objectives regarding Yui and practicality, not personal affinity, making him Gendo's sole confidant on the Human Instrumentality Project's full scope.
In the *Rebuild of Evangelion* films, Fuyutsuki aids Gendo in reactivating Evangelion Unit-13 during *Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time*. He commands the NHG fleet (Erlösung, Erbsünde, Gebet) against WILLE's Wunder near Antarctica, operating unprotected from L-Density exposure aboard NHG Gebet. Mari Makinami Illustrious infiltrates his vessel; he identifies her as "Mari Iscariot," while she addresses him as "Fuyutsuki-sensei," hinting at prior ties. After discussing Gendo's plans, he dissolves into LCL.
Earlier in *Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo*, Fuyutsuki reveals truths to Shinji Ikari through a shogi game. He discloses Yui Ikari's absorption into Evangelion Unit-01, Rei Ayanami's clone origins, and Gendo's intentions, stating his own allegiance honors Yui's memory—all framed as Gendo's design.
His name translates to "Winter Moon," sharing its name with a WWII Akizuki-class destroyer that rescued Yamato survivors. His rank is consistently denoted as Vice Commander, Deputy Commander, or Sub-Commander.
