Description
Shito Tachibana stands at the narrative's core, initially introduced as a high school student surviving a fatal bus accident alongside Chika Akatsuki. Unbeknownst to others, he had already existed as a zombie for years, covertly placed at the school under a human disguise by the Zombie-Loan office. His arresting appearance—dark greenish-blue hair, reddish eyes, and a preference for formal brown suit jackets—fuels admiration among female peers, though he typically remains aloof to such attention.

Born under extraordinary circumstances, Shito emerged after a seven-year pregnancy via the "Corpse Release Spell" because his mother Chizuru was already a zombie. This granted him innate zombie nature, meaning he never experienced human life. His origins trace back over 150 years, with documented presence in late 19th-century Shanghai. For generations, he served as a high-value asset for the Xu Fu Mafia, enduring torture from the exorcist Toho, who simultaneously deemed him a "perfect monster" and "disgustingly beautiful," breeding Shito’s profound hatred toward him.

A spiritual chain binds Shito to Chika Akatsuki after their Zombie-Loan revival swapped their right hands. This connection demands proximity; separation rots their hands. Functionally, attaching Chika’s right hand allows Shito to manifest a 9½-inch revolver firing spiritually charged bullets lethal to zombies. This weapon contrasts Chika’s soul-guiding katana: while Chika ushers souls to heaven, Shito condemns them to hell. His initial Zombie-Loan contract focused solely on preserving this hand-swap, not regaining human life.

Shito displays a reserved, often icy demeanor, particularly toward those he perceives as squandering life. His early interactions with Michiru Kita reveal overt disgust upon learning of her lack of will to live, declaring her undeserving of life. Yet beneath this cold exterior lies latent warmth and protectiveness. He forges a reluctant friendship with Chika, marked by constant bickering but mutual reliance. His bond with Michiru evolves dramatically—he eventually entrusts her with his most prized possession, a lycoris-engraved comb from his mother, despite initially threatening her for touching it. This comb symbolizes his complex, arguably romantic devotion to his mother.

Key experiences further define him: kidnapped by Yoshizumi, he bonds with a golem mirroring his existence as a tool; her death shatters him. Later, Xu Fu Mafia’s Toho subjects him to possession experiments using the perfected Corpse Release Spell, enabling the entity Lao Ye to seize his body. Koyomi Yoimachi sacrifices her life to restore his soul, confessing her unrequited love—a revelation leaving him stunned and sorrowful. These events deepen his capacity for empathy.

Notable traits include his chaotic, collectible-stuffed dorm room featuring items like "Betty" figurines, where he detects minute displacements. He exhibits computer illiteracy, misinterpreting internet slang like "offline meeting," and displays uninhibited romantic behavior when intoxicated. His name carries dual meanings: "apostle" or "purpose for which money is spent."
