Description
Shinei Nouzen, known as Shin, was born on May 19, 2132, in the Republic of San Magnolia's First Sector. His family enjoyed a sheltered, kind existence before the war with the Empire of Giad. As descendants of Giadian nobles with Pyrope and Onyx heritage, they faced forced relocation to an internment camp under the Republic's discriminatory policies against non-Alba ethnicities. Shin's father enlisted to restore family rights, but the Republic broke its promise. After his father's death, Shin's mother enlisted and died in combat. Her loss drove Shin's brother Shourei to strangle Shin in grief, leaving a permanent neck scar. This near-death incident unlocked Shin's latent telepathic ability to hear the dead, including Legion-assimilated voices. Four years later, hearing Shourei among the Legion, Shin enlisted as a Processor at age twelve.

Initially shunned by fellow Eighty-Six for his noble blood, Shin learned combat from an Adularia priest who sheltered him. Joining Spearhead Squadron, he adopted the callsign "Undertaker" for mercy-killing mortally wounded comrades and preserving their identities through collected dog tags. His capacity to detect Legion movements earned him the moniker "Reaper"—a title mixing reverence and fear due to his units' high casualties. Rumors claimed he unintentionally transmitted the Legion's voices through the Para-RAID, driving Handlers to madness or suicide. In the Federacy military, his icy demeanor, skeletal personal mark, and swift promotions bred similar notoriety; some mistook him for royalty due to his Pyrope eyes and Onyx hair.

Trauma shaped Shin into a selfless, detached figure who saw himself as a "ghost" with no future beyond war, often disregarding his safety. His sole purpose became carrying fallen comrades' memories to their "final destination," symbolized by a box of 561 dog tags. He concealed his scar with a sky-blue scarf gifted by his first captain. Despite stoicism, he showed kindness to the sentient drone Fido, which evolved through their childhood bond and followed him between postings. After laying Shourei's Legion form to rest, Shin's self-worth vanished, leaving him adrift.

Relationships within Spearhead Squadron catalyzed his growth. Raiden Shuga, initially hostile, became his closest friend after understanding Shin's burdens. Kurena Kukumila admired him but accepted his view of her as a sister. Theo Rikka and Anju Emma were trusted comrades; Shin supported Anju's romance with Dustin Jaeger to help her heal. Frederica Rosenfort, a former empress, mirrored Shin's past fixation on a mission, forging a sibling-like bond where he shielded her while testing her resolve.

Shin's pivotal evolution stemmed from Vladilena Milizé, his Republic Handler. Initially cold toward her idealism, he grew to respect her insistence on treating the Eighty-Six as humans. Their shared link to Shourei deepened trust when Lena survived Legion voices transmitted via Shin's Para-RAID. Reuniting after the Republic's fall at a memorial site, Shin entrusted the fallen's memories to Lena, relinquishing his "Reaper" role. She inspired his first personal wish: to show her the sea. Though struggling to voice his feelings, Shin confessed his love during respite in the Alliance of Wald; Lena answered with a silent kiss. This freed him from emotional chains, granting him a stake in humanity's survival. He later formalized their bond aboard the Stella Maris, anchoring his commitment to life beyond battle.

Shin's Pyrope-derived telepathy initially communicated with familial neural patterns. His near-death experience expanded it to hear the dead's lingering consciousness, particularly the Legion's mechanized units that used human neural networks. This caused constant mental strain but enabled tactical advantages like enemy detection. He could also perceive certain Leviathans, though the ability's scope was undefined. Self-taught through voracious reading and battlefield experience, his combat and strategic skills let him command without formal training. Keen observation allowed him to deduce Frederica's identity from subtle behavioral clues.

After joining the Federacy, Shin avoided his grandfather, Seiei Nouzen, due to unresolved trauma. He later agreed to build familial ties, sending Seiei postcards from Wald. His grandmother, Gelda Maika, expressed joy at their reunion.
