Description
Shinei Nouzen, known as Shin, entered the world on May 19, RY 351/SY 2132, into the Nouzen clan, a distinguished warrior lineage of the former Giadian Empire. His early years unfolded within the sheltered confines of the Republic of San Magnolia's First Sector, filled with affection. War shattered this peace, forcing his family's relocation to an internment camp because of their Colorata status and mixed Pyrope-Onyx blood. His father enlisted first, trusting the Republic's false pledges of restored rights, followed by his mother. After their deaths, Shin and his older brother, Shourei, remained under an Adularia priest's care. Consumed by grief, Shourei nearly strangled Shin to death, leaving a permanent neck scar and unexpectedly amplifying Shin's latent Pyrope telepathy to perceive the voices of the dead. This event fractured their bond, and Shourei enlisted without reconciliation.

Four years after Shourei's enlistment, Shin heard his brother's voice emanating from the Legion, confirming his death. Shin then enlisted as a Processor in the Republic's military at age 12. Assigned to Spearhead Squadron in the Eighty-Sixth Sector, he earned the callsign "Undertaker" for retrieving makeshift dog tags from fallen comrades' Juggernauts, vowing to bury them when the war ended. His high survival rate and the superstition that serving alongside him guaranteed death led to his reputation as the "Reaper of the Eastern Front." This isolation persisted until he met Raiden Shuga, who became his first enduring comrade.

Shin's Pyrope telepathy initially permitted communication only with family. His near-death experience expanded this ability to perceive the consciousness of the deceased, particularly the Legion's mechanized units harvesting human neural systems. This power caused severe mental strain and unintentionally traumatized or drove several Republic Handlers to suicide. He used it tactically, transmitting Legion positions via the Para-RAID system to aid his squadron. Shin also possessed exceptional combat skills, strategic acumen despite no formal training, and sharp observational intelligence, demonstrated by deducing Frederica Rosenfort's true identity as the last Empress of Giad.

His personality was marked by stoicism, self-sacrifice, and a profound lack of self-worth. He viewed himself as a "ghost" with no future, recklessly seeking death in battle after fulfilling his vow to bury the dog tags and put Shourei's Legion form to rest. This outlook shifted through bonds with his squadron—Raiden, Anju, Theo, and Kurena—who provided stability, and Vladilena "Lena" Milizé, his Handler. Lena's unwavering trust and insistence on treating the Eighty-Six as human challenged his nihilism. Their connection deepened over time; during their stay in the Alliance of Wald, Shin confessed his feelings for her, acknowledging her as a reason to live.

After the Republic's fall, the Federacy of Giad rescued Shin and his squadron. He joined the Eighty-Sixth Strike Package, struggling to adapt to life beyond combat. Reuniting with Lena solidified his commitment to a future; he began prioritizing survival and protecting others. He reconciled with his past by leaving the collected dog tags at a memorial and apologizing at the grave of Eugene, a comrade he failed to protect. His development culminated in rejecting the Nouzen clan's pressure to become heir, deeming it a "pain" compared to his chosen path with Lena.
