Description
Kujaku, originally named Akira, is the son of the monk Jikaku and a female pilgrim recognized as an incarnation of Ksitigarbha (Jizō Bosatsu). Separated from his twin sister Tomoko in childhood, he was raised by the secret Buddhist demon-hunting sect Ura-Kōya under the guidance of mentor Jikū Ajari. His heritage encompasses multiple reincarnations, embodying the entities Mahamayuri (Kujaku Myō-ō), Lucifer, and Melek Taus, bestowing immense supernatural abilities and positioning him as a pivotal figure in cosmic clashes between light and darkness.
As a Tantric Buddhist monk, Kujaku specializes in exorcism and combating supernatural threats, wielding ritual chants, hand gestures, and a vajra as his primary weapon. His powers include spellcasting, energy projection, and spiritual purification, deeply rooted in esoteric Buddhist practices. Despite his sacred duties, he exhibits a carefree and unconventional personality, openly indulging in worldly pleasures like food, women, and entertainment. He also experiences motion sickness during vehicle travel, adding a humanizing flaw.
Kujaku's journey centers on confronting the Rikudoshu, an evil organization led by the Teachers of Eight Leaves. This group seeks to revive the Peacock King and Snake Queen—manifestations of Kujaku and his sister Tomoko—to birth the destructive Dark Vairocana. Tomoko, the incarnation of Rahu (Tenjaō), was raised by a Neo-Nazi cult aiming to weaponize her powers, creating a profound personal and ideological rift between the siblings. The Teachers of Eight Leaves employ various schemes across the series to manipulate Kujaku and Tomoko into fulfilling their apocalyptic prophecy.
Key adversaries include Siegfried von Mittgard, a Neo-Nazi leader targeting Kujaku to steal his powers and establish a global regime as the Regent of Darkness. This conflict intensifies when Siegfried's faction steals the sacred Dragon Orb, an artifact containing sealed darkness, and exploits Tomoko's connection to it. To counter these threats, Kujaku forms uneasy alliances with former rivals: Onimaru Tarōja, a half-demon mercenary, and Kō Kaihō, heir to a Chinese sorcerer clan. These partnerships evolve from initial hostility into mutual respect and collaboration.
Kujaku's character development focuses on unraveling his obscured past and accepting his dual nature as both a force for good and a vessel of dark potential. His struggles involve resisting the corrupting influence of his inherited powers while protecting Tomoko from being consumed by her destined role as the Snake Queen. The culmination of his arc entails direct confrontations with Siegfried's Neo-Nazi forces and the Rikudoshu, aiming to prevent the misuse of the Dragon Orb and the rise of the Dark Vairocana.
