Description
Hikaru Ichijyo, born November 4, 1992, was raised by his father after his mother's early death. Growing up in an all-male household contributed to occasional clumsiness and initial difficulties in interpersonal relationships, particularly with women. He worked as a stunt pilot in his father's flying circus, mastering Fokker D.VII biplanes under mentor Roy Focker. This experience forged his exceptional piloting skills, earning him seven amateur flying competition titles by age 16. He maintained a philosophical opposition to military service and killing, preferring aerial acrobatics.
His life shifted dramatically on February 7, 2009, when Roy Focker invited him to the SDF-1 Macross launch ceremony. Hikaru accidentally flew his civilian Fan Racer into a military demonstration, interrupting proceedings. When Zentradi forces attacked, he became sealed inside a VF-1D Valkyrie test unit (VT-102) and thrust into combat. Struggling to control the Valkyrie during this chaotic first engagement, he accidentally destroyed several buildings in Battroid mode near the Nyan-Nyan restaurant. He rescued civilian Lynn Minmay from falling debris, securing her in his cockpit as they fled aboard the Macross just before its accidental space fold jump transported them near Pluto.
Stranded in deep space with Minmay for two weeks before rescue, they survived on salvaged supplies, including a space-caught tuna. This shared isolation created an emotional bond. Following rescue, Minmay reopened her family restaurant aboard Macross City while Hikaru reluctantly joined the U.N. Spacy military, maintaining his distaste for killing despite circumstances. His exceptional flight abilities propelled him through rapid promotions. He eventually commanded Vermillion Squadron after a successful rescue mission and later assumed leadership of Skull Squadron following Roy Focker's death, piloting the VF-1S Valkyrie "Skull One." He attained captain rank by war's end.
Hikaru's personal life centered on a complex relationship triangle with Minmay and superior officer Misa Hayase. Initially infatuated with Minmay, he grew distant as her singing career escalated. Simultaneously, his professional relationship with Misa evolved through shared combat experiences: rescuing her from Mars Base Sara's destruction, a "mission kiss" demonstrating human culture to Zentradi, and surviving escape attempts together. A pivotal moment occurred when trapped overnight in a transformed Macross section; confiding personal struggles deepened their connection. When Misa later departed for Earth on a diplomatic mission, Hikaru conveyed "Wish you return to Macross safely" via Morse code, revealing his emerging feelings.
After Earth's devastation, Hikaru rescued Misa as the sole survivor of Alaska Base. He declared contentment even if they were humanity's last survivors, solidifying their bond. Post-war, he spent six months as a VF-4 Lightning III test pilot on Apollo Lunar Base. Returning to Earth, he grappled with lingering feelings for Minmay, causing Misa significant emotional pain. He ultimately chose Misa after she confessed her love while preparing to depart on a colonization mission. They married on October 10, 2011, and had a daughter, Miku Ichijyo, a year later.
In 2012, Hikaru and Misa were appointed captain of the Megaroad-01's fighter squadron and ship commander, respectively, leading humanity's first space colonization expedition. Lynn Minmay joined as a civilian. During this mission, he appeared to Minmay in a vision during her final Earth concert, handing her a microphone before Misa greeted her, symbolizing their reconciled friendship. The Megaroad-01 lost contact with Earth in July 2016, and its entire crew, including Hikaru, Misa, Miku, and Minmay, were declared missing.
Hikaru was known for model airplane building, evidenced by VF-X-4 and XB-70 Valkyrie models displayed in his quarters. His piloting signature move was the "boost to inverted climb" maneuver taught by Roy Focker.
