Description
Hajime Ryudo, 23, is the eldest of four brothers and the primary guardian of the Ryudo family after the deaths of their parents and grandfather. He initially taught history at Kyowa College, founded by his grandfather Sukaza Ryudo, but lost his directorship due to manipulation by his uncle, Seichiro Toba. Despite this setback, he remains academically gifted and intellectually formidable.

He possesses a calm demeanor and mild manners, yet exhibits fierce protectiveness when his family is threatened. As the de facto patriarch, he shares mutual respect and camaraderie with the second brother, Tsuzuku; acts as mentor and disciplinarian to the third brother, Owaru; and displays heightened guardianship over the youngest brother, Amaru, often interpreting Amaru's prophetic dragon dreams. He maintains a close, implicitly romantic relationship with their cousin Matsuri Toba, who manages the household, though their interactions remain morally restrained.

Hajime is the reincarnation of the Blue Dragon King of the East, one of four divine Dragon Kings from Chinese mythology. In human form, he possesses exceptional physical strength and combat prowess, making him the most formidable fighter among the brothers. When transformed into his dragon form, he commands gravitational forces. These powers attract adversaries like the "Four Sisters"—a techno-economic organization descended from the ancient dragon enemies, the "Bulls"—and figures such as Tadayoshi Funazu, an influential nonagenarian seeking to exploit the brothers' abilities.

His narrative arc involves defending his brothers from sustained attacks while reconciling their ordinary lives with their dragon heritage. He leads confrontations against antagonists including Funazu, who once collaborated with the brothers' grandfather, and Patricia Lansdale (Lady L), an agent of the Four Sisters orchestrating the brothers' transformations. Hajime prioritizes familial unity and safety, strategizing to evade or neutralize threats without unnecessary violence. His development underscores evolving acceptance of his divine identity while steadfastly upholding his role as protector.

He appears across all 12 episodes of the original OVA adaptation, which adapts the first six novels, with his portrayal emphasizing leadership and resilience. Spin-off manga by Clamp and Megumi Koji focus primarily on Owaru. The novel series, ongoing since 1987, continues his story beyond the anime's scope.
