TV-Series
Description
Kuki Urie is introduced as a nineteen-year-old Rank 1 Ghoul Investigator and a member of the Quinx Squad, a specialized unit of humans surgically altered to possess ghoul-like abilities. He is a slender young man with purple hair, dark triangular eyes with diamond-shaped irises, and two small moles below his left eye. Early in the story he serves as the former squad leader of the Quinx Squad within the Commission of Counter Ghoul, and later rises to become the leader of the S2 Squad and an Associate Special Class Investigator. His RC type is Koukaku, and his primary weapon is a Bikaku-type quinque named Tsunagi.
Urie presents a cool-headed, often monotonous exterior that masks a fiercely ambitious personality. He is dedicated to his duties to the point of ruthlessness, frequently killing more ghouls than necessary and earning reprimands for his excessive zeal. He tends to act hastily, charging into investigations and executing missions independently without waiting for teammates. This solitary behavior stems from a consuming desire for personal glory and promotion; he resents sharing credit and is willing to manipulate comrades or sow discord to achieve his goals. Beneath the ambition lies a deep jealousy toward his superiors, particularly Haise Sasaki, and an unshakable conviction that ghouls must be eradicated under any circumstance. He lives by a personal code of never retreating in battle, a principle rooted in his father’s death. His father, a special class investigator, ordered his squad to withdraw and died fighting the One-Eyed Owl alone. Urie nurses a lasting grudge against investigators Takeomi Kuroiwa and Iwao for not staying to fight alongside his father, viewing their survival as disregard for his loss. Despite his stern demeanor, he is revealed to be a talented painter and harbors a strong dislike of sweet foods.
Urie’s motivation is a relentless pursuit of power and recognition, driven by the trauma of losing his father and a fear of being seen as inadequate. He constantly seeks to surpass others, even requesting augmentations from Professor Shiba to enhance his kagune’s power in order to gain an edge over Sasaki. His early role in the narrative centers on his friction with the Quinx Squad: he clashes with his mentor Sasaki and often undermines team cohesion. As the story progresses, he evolves from a self-centered, abrasive figure into a more dependable leader. Confrontations with powerful ghouls force him to reexamine his worldview, and the loss of squad members teaches him the value of teamwork and the emotional cost of his unchecked ambition. By the later arcs he assumes greater responsibility as the head of the S2 Squad, mentoring others while still carrying his intense drive.
His key relationships define much of his growth. His dynamic with Haise Sasaki begins as bitter envy; that resentment gradually transforms into a complicated respect that pushes him to mature. Fellow Quinx members Tooru Mutsuki, Ginshi Shirazu, and Saiko Yonebayashi each challenge his isolationist tendencies, with Shirazu’s optimism and Saiko’s loyalty helping him recognize genuine camaraderie. The lingering resentment toward Kuroiwa and Iwao adds a layer of unresolved grief, while his collaboration with Professor Shiba underscores his willingness to push his body to dangerous extremes.
Urie’s abilities are formidable and grow across the series. As a Quinx he wields both quinque weapons and his own implanted ghoul capabilities. His Koukaku RC type gives him a strong defensive and offensive foundation, and he is a skilled close-quarters combatant with agile, tactical movement. His initial quinque, Tsunagi, is a mass-produced longsword. Later he acquires Ginkui, a living SS-rated Bikaku quinque fashioned from Noro’s kagune, capable of absorbing RC cells and devastating foes. During the battle against Donato Porpora, he breaks his limits and manifests a Half-Kakuja state, his kagune intensifying with dual kagune eyes and dramatically increased speed and power. This transformation is immensely powerful but so far uncontrollable, reflecting his ongoing clash between ambition and self-preservation. Throughout the story, his combat style mirrors his personality: aggressive, precise, and willing to strain himself past his physical limits in order to achieve victory.
