Description
An Onoya serves as a ReLIFE Support Division employee at the ReLIFE Laboratory's Kantou Branch. During the 2013 academic year, she operated undercover as a third-year transfer student at Aoba High School. She initially recommended Arata Kaizaki as her primary candidate for the ReLIFE experiment. However, due to her incomplete training, supervision of Subject No. 002 (Kaizaki) was reassigned to her senior colleague, Ryō Yoake. She later assumed responsibility for monitoring Subject No. 001, Chizuru Hishiro, starting in the second term.
Before joining ReLIFE, she worked in retail apparel but encountered workplace challenges. After anonymously contacting the ReLIFE Laboratory's counseling hotline—identifying herself as "A-san" with her counselor "Y-san"—she resolved to join the organization to help others. Upon employment, she discovered the true nature of the ReLIFE experiment with surprise. She underwent ReLIFE training herself during the 2012 academic year at a high school with casual rules. There, she observed Yoake's struggles with Subject No. 001; her intervention helped him regain confidence, leading to the experiment's extension for that subject.
Her appearance alternates between two distinct styles. At Aoba High, she adopts a "nerdy" disguise featuring twin braids, rectangular prescription-less glasses, and no nail polish to avoid attention. Outside school, she wears her light brown hair loose and wavy, often accessorized with golden earrings and makeup. She maintains a cheerful and bright demeanor, masking a manipulative and cunning side. This is exemplified by her attempt to seduce Kaizaki to test his reactions and her initial pretense of not knowing Yoake. Despite her teasing tendencies, she demonstrates genuine concern for the subjects' well-being and professional responsibility.
During Kaizaki's experiment, she proactively inserted herself into his social circle as a fellow transfer student. She intentionally failed academic tests to create joint study sessions and visited his apartment under false pretenses. These actions, particularly the seduction attempt crossing ethical boundaries, led Yoake to reveal her ReLIFE affiliation to Kaizaki. Her revised cover story positioned her as a second-year trainee learning from Yoake. As Hishiro's supervisor, she enforced protocol strictly, refusing to confirm Hishiro's suspicions about Kaizaki being a fellow subject and reminding her of the memory-erasure consequences.
Her relationship with Yoake evolved from professional mentorship to mutual romantic involvement. She initially teased him frequently but deeply respected him as her superior while harboring unspoken feelings. Yoake later revealed he was her counselor "Y-san," reciprocated her feelings, and their relationship became romantic. With Kaizaki and Hishiro, she balanced playful teasing with sincere worry about the experiment's emotional impact, particularly regarding memory erasure and potential regression to isolation for Hishiro.
Her character resolution varies across adaptations. In the manga and anime OVA (Kanketsu-hen), she continues her support role and romantic relationship with Yoake. The live-action film adaptation significantly reduces her role to an ordinary classmate without ReLIFE affiliations.
