Description
Kokone Morikawa faces impending college decisions while living in Okayama with her eccentric mechanic father, Momotarō, her mother Ikumi having died in an accident during her childhood. Kokone habitually naps, experiencing intense dreams that increasingly merge with her waking reality.
These dreams transport her to Heartland, a technological realm where she embodies Ancien, a young princess wielding a magic tablet. This device grants sentience to machines like the blue toy dog Joy and the motorcycle Heart. Heartland is threatened by the molten Colossus and political schemes involving the adviser Bewan. These visions stem from childhood bedtime stories her father told about "Ancien and the Magic Tablet," though Kokone dismissed them as fantasy.
Her routine shatters three days before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics when her father is suddenly arrested, accused of corporate espionage against Shijima Motors. Forced into action, Kokone partners with Morio Sawatari, a childhood friend recently returned from college. Fleeing pursuers from Shijima Motors, notably a man named Watanabe who resembles Bewan, she retrieves a cracked tablet computer and a stuffed bear from home – objects mirroring those from her dreams. She and Morio journey towards Tokyo.
During this escape, the boundary between dreams and reality blurs. Events in Heartland begin influencing the physical world; a shared dream of Heart flying through the sky coincides with the real motorcycle autonomously carrying them to Osaka overnight. Kokone also discovers the tablet functions in reality, enabling communication with sympathetic Shijima mechanics who assist them. This prompts Kokone to investigate her family's hidden past, uncovering that her mother, Ikumi, was the daughter of Shijima Motors' chairman and a pioneering programmer of self-driving car technology. Her grandfather rejected this research, but Momotarō secretly continued it after Ikumi's death. The tablet contains remnants of this technology, making it a corporate target before the Olympics.
A pivotal dream shifts Kokone's understanding: she witnesses Ancien fall from a giant robot while fighting the Colossus. As Ancien plummets, her appearance transforms into Ikumi's, and she perishes after cracking the tablet. This reveals that Ancien represents Ikumi, not Kokone, and the bedtime stories were allegories about her mother's life, ambitions, and tragic death, deepening Kokone's connection to her maternal legacy.
In the climax against Watanabe/Bewan at Shijima headquarters and in Heartland, Kokone actively applies the magic tablet's principles in reality. She empowers machinery to save her father from peril, mirroring Ancien/Ikumi's actions. Surviving through technology and symbolic intervention, Kokone reconciles with her grandfather, Isshin Shijima, who expresses regret. She deduces her name fuses "heart" (kokoro) and "wing" (hane), reflecting her family's technological ethos.
Kokone emerges with a strengthened sense of identity, integrating the truths of her parents' sacrifices, her mother's innovative spirit, and the tangible impact of her childhood stories. She transitions from a passive dreamer to an active participant in shaping her family's legacy and her future.
