TV Special
Description
The Going Merry began as a caravel designed by Merry, servant to Kaya in Syrup Village, intended as a luxury vessel. After the Straw Hat Pirates defended the village against the Black Cat Pirates, Kaya gifted the ship to the crew. It served as their primary vessel traversing the East Blue and into the Grand Line.

This medium-sized ship boasted a distinctive sheep-themed design, featuring a wool-like curled figurehead at the bow and two masts. It mounted four cannons, though these saw infrequent use. Functional spaces included a combined meeting room, kitchen, and helm station, men's and women's quarters below deck, storage, a cannon deck, and a bathroom. Following the Arlong Park Arc, three mikan trees from Bell-mère's orchard were planted on deck as a memento of Nami's home.

Throughout perilous voyages, the Going Merry accumulated severe structural damage. It suffered collisions with Laboon (breaking the figurehead and a mast), attacks by Wapol (who consumed part of the hull), harpoon impacts during the escape from Arabasta, and general wear during Skypiea adventures. Repairs, hampered by the crew's lack of carpentry skills, resulted in visible patches and crude reinforcements. The critical failure emerged at Water 7 when an inspection revealed the irreparable destruction of the keel, the ship's structural backbone, rendering it unfit for future sailing.

The crew's deep emotional bond manifested physically through the emergence of a klabautermann – a nautical spirit from Germanic folklore appearing on well-loved ships. Usopp witnessed this entity secretly conducting repairs. Legend holds that the klabautermann's visible form foretells a ship's end. Despite its condition, the Going Merry navigated autonomously through a storm to rescue the crew during their escape from Enies Lobby, confirming its sentience and embodiment as a crew member.

Following this rescue, the ship reached its limit. The crew held a Viking funeral, setting it ablaze at sea. During the farewell, the Going Merry audibly expressed gratitude and apology through its klabautermann form, directly communicating feelings of happiness for their time together and sorrow for being unable to sail further.

The ship's legacy continued with the Thousand Sunny, its successor explicitly designed by Franky and the Galley-La Company to preserve the Going Merry's "soul." A smaller vessel within the Thousand Sunny, the Mini Merry II, featuring a similar sheep figurehead, was acknowledged by Usopp as a reincarnation of its spirit.

The TV special "Episode of Merry: The Tale of One More Friend" revisited the ship's story through flashbacks. Brook, who joined after the ship's retirement, learned about the Going Merry from Usopp and Chopper aboard the Mini Merry II. The special condensed the Water 7 and Enies Lobby arcs, highlighting the ship's role as a cherished friend and its emotional farewell, utilizing updated animation and incorporating elements like the klabautermann's appearance on the Thousand Sunny.
