Description
Born Toshimasu into the Takigawa clan, Maeda Keiji was adopted by Maeda Toshihisa, positioning him to potentially lead the Maeda clan. However, Oda Nobunaga replaced Toshihisa with Toshiie as head, straining Keiji's relationship with his uncle. This lost inheritance fueled Keiji's rebellious, free-spirited nature, often clashing with Toshiie and his wife Matsu over his carefree ways. Despite these conflicts, Keiji held a deep affection for his adoptive family.
Consistently portrayed as a happy-go-lucky wanderer, Keiji revels in festivals, pranks, and shirking responsibilities, frequently accompanied by his small monkey, Yumekichi. He wields an oversized nodachi one-handed and is associated with the element of wind. In "Sengoku Basara 2," he flees the capital to escape Toshiie and Matsu's attempts to bring him home, culminating in battles against them before continuing his travels and seeking challenges against warriors like Masamune Date.
His backstory includes a significant friendship with Toyotomi Hideyoshi that fractured due to Hideyoshi's growing lust for power. Explored in "Sengoku Basara 2 Heroes" and revisited in "Sengoku Basara 4," Keiji confronts his unresolved feelings about their estrangement. After defeating Hideyoshi, Keiji tearfully accepts their friendship cannot be restored, an event profoundly impacting him and fostering a matured perspective on relationships and responsibility.
Following Hideyoshi's death in "Sengoku Basara 3," Keiji joins the Uesugi army under Kenshin Uesugi. His storyline involves delivering messages and encountering Magoichi Saika, whom he falls for instantly. Much of his path centers on pursuing and attempting to protect her, though his advances often irritate her. Player choices determine his alignment with the Eastern or Western Army, leading to conclusions where he returns to the Uesugi, rejoins the Maeda, or stays with Magoichi.
By "Sengoku Basara 4," Keiji assumes leadership of the Kaga Maeda clan after Toshiie, marking a shift from his vagabond life. While still inherently free-spirited, he grapples with his new responsibilities and opposes Emperor Yoshiteru's restoration of power. His interactions with Sakon mirror Matsu's past lectures, as Keiji now admonishes others for wasting their talents. His drama route culminates in a battle with Yoshiteru, where both acknowledge shared loneliness after losing friends, forging a mutual bond through laughter despite their differences.
In the spin-off "Gakuen Basara," Keiji appears as a student at Basara Academy. His carefree persona persists, featuring comedic attempts to woo Magoichi Saika that consistently annoy her. The school setting translates his historical and game traits into exaggerated academic rivalries and absurd scenarios, maintaining his role as a prank-loving wanderer.
