Description
Nagisa Misumi is the central protagonist of the Futari wa Pretty Cure series and its sequel, Pretty Cure Max Heart. She is a second-year student at Verone Academy, where she is the ace of the girls’ lacrosse team despite her young age. Nagisa has short, messy orange-brown hair and brown eyes, and she is often seen in her school uniform or casual athletic wear. After meeting the fairy Mepple from the Garden of Light, she gains the ability to transform into Cure Black, one half of the legendary Pretty Cure duo.
Nagisa’s personality is energetic, outgoing, and impulsive. She excels at sports and physical activities, but she dislikes studying and often struggles academically. She has a strong sense of justice and a reckless streak, frequently acting on instinct before thinking. Despite her tomboyish reputation, Nagisa has a very girly side: she dreams of a romantic relationship, enjoys shopping, owns a large collection of stuffed animals, and is conscious about her appearance. She is also sensitive and deeply cares for others, though she tends to hide these feelings behind a cheerful or exasperated façade. Her catchphrase is “Unbelievable!” when she is shocked or annoyed.
Nagisa’s motivations evolve over the series. Initially, she becomes a Pretty Cure reluctantly, only to protect her school and the world from the forces of the Dark Zone. As she grows, her sense of responsibility strengthens, and she fights to protect the people she loves, especially her partner Honoka Yukishiro (Cure White). Her desire to be a normal teenage girl often clashes with her duties, but she ultimately embraces her role as a guardian of light.
In the story, Nagisa is the more physically powerful member of the duo. As Cure Black, she wears a black-and-pink outfit that emphasizes agility and combat. Her primary ability is superhuman strength, allowing her to deliver powerful physical blows and jump great distances. She can also combine powers with Cure White to perform special techniques, most notably the Marble Screw, a spinning lightning-based attack, and later the Rainbow Therapy, which purifies enemies. These techniques require the two to hold hands, a limitation that villains sometimes try to exploit by separating them.
Nagisa’s key relationships define her journey. Her partnership with Honoka is central: they start as opposites who barely tolerate each other, but through their shared battles, they develop a deep, inseparable bond of trust and friendship. Nagisa also has a playful but caring relationship with Mepple, her fairy partner, even though he often causes her frustration. She has a crush on an upperclassman named Shougo Fujimura, though this feelings gradually fade as her bond with Honoka deepens. At home, she lives with her parents and her younger brother Ryouta, with whom she frequently argues but is protective of. Later, she befriends Hikari Kujou, who becomes the third member of the team as Shiny Luminous.
Nagisa’s character development is marked by her growing maturity and emotional awareness. Early in the series, she is brash and self-centered; over time, she learns the importance of cooperation, patience, and sacrifice. She becomes more attuned to the feelings of others and more willing to express her own vulnerability. By the end of Max Heart, she has grown into a confident and compassionate leader, though she retains her spirited and slightly clumsy nature. Her journey from a carefree athlete to a dedicated hero illustrates the core themes of friendship, responsibility, and inner strength that define the Pretty Cure franchise.
