Description
Yoshitake Shiraishi, famed as the "Escape King," is central to the narrative. Abandoned as a baby at an old temple run by a single priest, he ran away in childhood and lived independently. His criminal activities started young, leading to multiple arrests and repeated escapes from juvenile prisons. After turning 20, incarceration at Kabato Prison placed him in a cell with Chouan Kumagishi and Zenjirou Shibukawa. There, he meticulously planned an escape by hiding a copied key inside a stag beetle after misleading guards with a fake key beneath his tongue. This escape launched his legendary reputation; he subsequently broke out of Maebashi, Kanazawa, Akita, and Kyoto prisons, earning the "Escape King" moniker. His final known imprisonment was at Abashiri Prison, where he became cellmates with Tetsuzou Nihei and Kazuo Henmi. During this period, he pursued Sister Miyazawa, a nun depicted in a shunga drawing given by Kumagishi, but abandoned this quest upon seeing her real appearance, which matched the drawing exactly.

Shiraishi possesses an ordinary build, light grey hair kept in a buzzcut with sideburns and a small beard, brown downturned eyes, and slightly wavy hair if grown out. A tattooed map of the Abashiri prisoner gold adorns his chest and back. He typically wears a purple hanten jacket over a white shirt and black vest, patched black trousers, a leather belt, and boots.

Personality-wise, he presents as carefree, goofy, and sociable, easily connecting with diverse groups like political prisoners and intelligence operatives. He avoids direct confrontation, preferring flight over fight, and indulges in gambling and brothel visits. Despite this frivolous exterior, he exhibits sharp street smarts and resourcefulness honed from years on the run. A romantic at heart, his pursuit of Sister Miyazawa revealed a yearning for idealized love, though his only sexual experiences were with prostitutes. Over time, he develops deep loyalty to Sugimoto and Asirpa, honoring commitments to them despite initial antagonism.

His survival relies on specialized abilities: deliberate joint dislocation to slip restraints or navigate narrow spaces, masterful exploitation of prison systems for escapes, and the regurgitation of small items stored in his stomach (e.g., razor blades, needles, wires, cartridges) tied to his teeth with horsehair. He habitually conceals tools like candy, needles, and wires on his body.

Shiraishi first encounters Sugimoto and Asirpa after being caught in their forest trap. Initially hostile, he escapes using a hidden razor blade but later forms a tentative alliance with them during a near-fatal hypothermia incident. In this crisis, he retrieves a hidden cartridge to start a life-saving fire, bargaining for his freedom in exchange. He shares critical information about the Abashiri convicts, including Hijikata Toshizou's leadership and the directive for escaped prisoners to regroup in Otaru. His recurring role includes aiding the group’s quest for the gold, such as guiding Asirpa to Otaru based on mixed-up sock scents and relaying rumors about Sugimoto’s whereabouts.

Character development reveals gradual depth beyond comic relief. While primarily providing levity, he demonstrates unwavering loyalty and occasional seriousness, particularly in protecting Asirpa and supporting Sugimoto’s group. His street-smart insights and non-violent problem-solving contrast with other trauma-hardened characters. Post-canon narratives suggest eventual marriage and settlement using the gold, though these extrapolations extend beyond primary sources.

Trivia notes include his height (170 cm), weight comparisons with other characters, birthday (March 3, Hinamatsuri), and real-life inspiration from Yoshie Shiratori, a Showa-era escape artist. Creator Satoru Noda envisioned him as a potential spin-off protagonist and compared him to Lupin III’s Fujiko Mine.
