Description
Shiemi Moriyama grew up in a family exorcist supply shop, primarily raised by her grandmother while her mother managed the business. Their close bond centered on the garden, where Shiemi absorbed extensive plant lore and nurtured a dream inspired by her grandmother's tales of the mythical Amahara Garden, a paradise holding all the world's flora.
Her grandmother died in an accident attempting garden maintenance after Shiemi left searching for Amahara. Consumed by guilt, Shiemi isolated herself in the garden, where the plant demon Dekalp, posing as a flower, cursed her. Dekalp offered help in exchange for her eternal presence, resulting in root-like growths immobilizing her legs and deepening her estrangement from her mother.
Physically, Shiemi possesses fair skin, green eyes, and platinum-blond hair (lighter in manga, brighter in anime). She initially wore traditional Japanese kimonos and haori, often barefoot, but switched to the True Cross Academy uniform upon enrollment. The uniform revealed a noticeably curvy figure previously hidden by her clothing. She stands 165 cm tall, weighing 49 kg initially, later increasing to 55 kg by chapter 135. Her hairstyle evolved from shoulder-length with straight bangs to longer hair tied in a ponytail or bun.
Personality-wise, Shiemi exhibited extreme shyness and social anxiety stemming from childhood illness and isolation. Her naivety about typical adolescent experiences led to misunderstandings, such as misinterpreting insults as praise. She developed habits like assigning personal names to plants, initially causing academic struggles. Core traits include optimism, loyalty, and exceptional kindness, though she avoided romantic relationships, considering herself unready and prioritizing self-improvement.
Her character development ignited when Rin and Yukio Okumura exorcised Dekalp, freeing her from the curse. This allowed reconciliation with her mother and inspired her enrollment in True Cross Academy to become an exorcist. Early challenges included difficulty making friends; she was exploited by Izumo Kamiki before learning mutual respect through Rin's intervention. Academically, she improved after using official plant names instead of personal nicknames.
As an exorcist-in-training, Shiemi specialized as a Tamer, summoning a Greenman familiar named "Nii" capable of generating healing herbs and plant-based barriers. Her abilities expanded significantly upon discovering her lineage as Shemihaza's successor—one of the Sol, founders of the True Cross Order. After a year and a half of training in a dimensional sanctuary under her grandmother's spirit, she gained divine powers: creating forests instantaneously, manifesting defensive plants like climbing roses, and deploying "Enpeira," a light barrier lethal to living beings. She also developed combat proficiency, defeating and subordinating Amaimon, the Earth King.
Key relationships include Yukio, whom she nicknamed "Yuki-chan" and admired as a mentor figure, and Rin, whose initial rejection of friendship offended her but later evolved into deep mutual trust. Rin's romantic confession prompted her to decline, citing a focus on self-growth. Her friendships with Izumo and classmates like Ryuji Suguro strengthened through shared missions, notably using her powers to contain Rin's demonic flames and later supporting allies in large-scale battles.
In later arcs, Shiemi joined the Grigori as Shemihaza's representative, crafting protective suits for exorcists and deploying battlefield support abilities. Her journey concluded with active roles in sealing demonic threats, reflecting her evolution from isolation to leadership.
