Teruki Hanazawa, known as Teru, is a third-year student at Black Vinegar Private Middle School. Initially an antagonist, he evolves into a friend and self-proclaimed greatest rival to Shigeo Kageyama. His school uniform features a purple suit jacket, dark plaid pants, a white collared shirt, and a striped teal tie. Peers consider him handsome, with eyes that frequently sparkle and a lean frame concealing well-defined muscle. His hair dramatically changes: originally blond in the anime (brown in the manga), a knife incident with Mob leaves him bald on top, forcing him to wear a tall wig. Further hair loss occurs during fights with Sakurai and ???% Mob, though it regrows by the series' end. Prior to meeting Mob, Teruki had never encountered other espers, leading him to grossly overestimate his power and importance, fueled by recruitment attempts from artificial espers sent by Claw. He employed telekinesis strategically for personal gain, like achieving perfect bowling scores, and saw himself as the world's protagonist. His defeat by Mob shatters this worldview: after Mob deflects his telekinetic knives, leaving Teruki partially bald, Mob's subsequent unconscious psychic outburst demolishes Teruki's school, strips him naked, and levitates him skyward. This profound humiliation induces a three-day fever and forces Teruki to accept his status as an "ordinary person," abandoning the belief that psychic powers justify harming others. Post-defeat, Teruki adopts Mob's principle of avoiding psychic force against people unless essential. He retains confidence in his diverse abilities and exhibits formidable willpower, resisting brainwashing twice during the Divine Tree Arc—a feat Dimple acknowledges as impressive. His motivation shifts toward preventing others from succumbing to pride like he did, though he struggles with humility and retains a self-righteous streak. He demonstrates care by opposing Dimple's brainwashing schemes and showing genuine anger over civilian exploitation. Despite growth, he occasionally uses morally ambiguous tactics, such as dunking people in water for information. Teruki participates in multiple conflicts. In the Big Cleanup Arc, he intimidates Ritsu but fails to capture him, preoccupied with his wig. During the 7th Division Arc, he shelters Mob, aids in infiltrating Claw's facility, and mentors five children from the Awakening Lab. In the World Domination Arc, he captures and interrogates a Claw member, battles Shimazaki (though initially outmatched), and contributes to Shimazaki's defeat by creating decoys and coordinating with Reigen's group. The Divine Tree Arc sees him attempt to halt Dimple's godhood plan; bound by plants, he intervenes in Mob's confrontation with Dimple, coercively threatening to dissolve their friendship to dissuade Mob from violent intervention, highlighting his complex morality and loyalty to Mob and brainwashed civilians. In the ???% Arc, Teruki advises Mob on confidence regarding Tsubomi's move. Later, confronting Mob during an unconscious rampage, he attempts restraint using a psychic-infused scarf and reasons about ethical power use. When this fails, he endures Mob's attacks behind a multi-layered barrier but is overpowered and left partially bald again. Teruki wields diverse psychic abilities, excelling in telekinesis for object manipulation, restraint, and slashing attacks. He creates protective barriers, including multi-layered versions, and rapidly copies others' techniques: Air Whip (summoning energy whips), Ethereal Bodies (creating weaker clones), Pyrokinesis (fire manipulation), Super Qigong (ki blasts), and Telekinetic Blast (explosions). He weaponizes his necktie into a sword capable of slicing rooms. Feats include casually defeating delinquents, lifting trees, moving at 60 km/h, dodging surprise attacks, and surviving assaults from Shimazaki and ???% Mob. His primary weakness is limited physical strength without psychic powers. Academically successful and popular, Teruki receives significant Valentine's Day attention via a meticulously scheduled series of dates. He stands 1.61 meters tall and weighs 47.7 kilograms. His birthday is April 13.
