Description
Emma is the main protagonist of the story, an eleven-year-old girl who lives at Grace Field House, an orphanage that is secretly a farm where children are raised to be harvested as food for demons. She is identified by the number 63194 tattooed on her neck. Physically, Emma is a young, fair-skinned girl of thin build with emerald green, oval-shaped eyes and notably thin eyebrows. Her most distinctive feature is her short, light orange hair, which is messy and sticks up at all angles around her head, including a single long lock that curves upwards from the right side like an antenna. During the escape from Grace Field, she cuts off her own ear to prevent the tracking devices from being used to find her siblings, and she later wears a bandage and eventually a braid to conceal the wound.
Emma is an extremely optimistic, loud, and cheerful girl who is full of life. Her extroverted and athletic nature provides a direct contrast to Norman's weaker physique and Ray's introverted personality. She is deeply caring and plays the role of an elder sister to the younger children, showing unlimited love and care for her foster siblings. A defining moment in her character occurs when she discovers the truth about the orphanage and sees the corpse of her friend Conny. After this traumatic experience, she undergoes an emotional change and resolves to never cry again, remaining steadfast in her beliefs and decisions.
Emma's primary motivation is her love for her family. She refuses to leave anyone behind, insisting that every child must escape together, a goal that other characters, particularly Ray, initially deem impossible. She is described as very forgiving, as she does not think less of Ray when she learns he was a spy for Isabella, instead still embracing him as a friend. According to Sister Krone, Emma always thinks of others before herself, so much that it dilutes her own chances of survival. Despite being a perfect test-scorer and a quick learner, Emma is noted to be silly and air-headed, with Ray calling her an airhead for believing she can achieve the impossible. She has a very strong will and refuses to give up no matter how bleak the situation looks, working through sheer determination. Ray notes that defying the impossible is Emma's special trait.
Within the story, Emma serves as the leader and emotional core of the escapees from Grace Field House. Along with Norman and Ray, she is considered one of the three premium quality goods at the plantation due to her high intelligence and consistent perfect scores on daily exams. While she is a perfect test-scorer, Norman is generally depicted as the most strategic thinker, and Emma is the most athletic of the three. After successfully escaping Grace Field with Ray and thirteen other orphans, Emma seeks to find William Minerva, believing he can grant her family a safe and peaceful life away from the demons. Her key relationships include her deep bond with Norman, who supports her idealistic goals, and her complex, argumentative yet cooperative dynamic with Ray, who balances her optimism with practical caution. She is characterized as the balance between these two friends.
Throughout the narrative, Emma undergoes significant development. After escaping, she gradually takes on the role of a leader, learning to hunt and handle weapons, and becoming determined to protect her family at all costs. She demonstrates a willingness to put herself in harm's way for others without hesitation. Despite her often sweet and kind demeanor, she can become serious and intimidating when her family is threatened, as seen when she confronts Ray about his past actions as a spy or when she threatens to destroy a shelter to secure cooperation from an ally. Her development continues as she faces morally complex situations, such as her deep discomfort with Norman's plan to commit genocide against the demons, as she realizes that demons also have families and friends. This leads her to pursue the seemingly impossible task of reforging an ancient promise to avoid bloodshed on either side. Her defining act of selflessness occurs at the climax of the story when she makes a promise with a demon god, sacrificing all of her memories and connections with her family to ensure that everyone, including all other cattle children, can safely reach the human world. She survives and is eventually found by her family, though without any recollection of her past life with them.
Emma's notable abilities include her high level of intelligence, athleticism, and physical endurance, which allow her to score perfectly on exams and excel in physical activities like tag and combat. She is a very quick learner, including in areas such as fighting and using firearms. Her most significant ability, however, is her extraordinary willpower and determination, which enables her to accomplish goals that others view as impossible. Her leadership skills naturally draw other children to her, uniting them as a family. As a peaceful person who prefers to talk things out rather than fight, Emma often seeks non-violent solutions even when facing deadly enemies, though she is fully capable of taking aggressive action when necessary to protect her loved ones.
