Tōru Amuro is an alias used by Rei Furuya, an undercover agent of the Japanese National Police Agency Security Bureau who infiltrates the Black Organization under the codename Bourbon. He maintains a cover as a private detective and part-time waiter at Café Poirot, situated below the Mouri Detective Agency, where he becomes an apprentice to Kogoro Mouri. Rei Furuya's childhood was marked by frequent fights provoked by insults about his mixed heritage, during which he was often treated by Elena Miyano at her clinic. Her disappearance after the Miyano family joined the Karasuma Group's laboratory left a profound impact on him. He later enrolled in the Police Academy to find her, graduating as the top student in both intellect and physical strength, as confirmed by his friend Wataru Date. His superior abilities in deduction, information gathering, and logical thinking secured his qualification for the National Police Agency. Adopting the alias Tooru Amuro to infiltrate the Black Organization, Rei severed ties with his past to protect his associates. He earned a formidable reputation within the organization and was granted the codename Bourbon. During a mission, he worked alongside another undercover agent, Scotch from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's Public Security Bureau. Scotch’s exposure led to a confrontation in which Rye, an undercover FBI agent, attempted to intervene. Misinterpreting Rei’s approaching footsteps as enemy forces, Scotch took his own life. Discovering Scotch dead, Rei blamed Rye—who was actually Shuichi Akai—for his friend’s death, igniting a lasting hatred and rivalry. Bourbon’s primary missions within the Black Organization involved locating the escaped scientist Shiho Miyano, also known as Sherry, and confirming the death of Shuichi Akai. With Vermouth’s assistance, he disguised himself as a scarred Akai to test reactions from FBI agents Jodie Starling and Andre Camel, and later from Masumi Sera. Although initially convinced of Akai’s death, events aboard the Mystery Train revived his suspicions. He also suspected a link between Sherry and Kogoro Mouri, prompting his apprenticeship at the detective agency. In this role, he observed Conan Edogawa’s unusual deductive abilities and began investigating the boy, though he remained unaware of Conan’s true identity or Akai’s disguise as Subaru Okiya. Rei Furuya possesses a complex personality. Publicly, as Tooru Amuro, he exhibits a cheerful, generous, and expressive demeanor, often bringing food to the Mouri agency and taking pleasure in presenting deductions. Privately, he displays a manipulative and ruthless side, willing to employ psychological traps and harm others to achieve his objectives. His secretive nature renders his actions unpredictable to both allies and enemies. He holds an intense personal vendetta against Shuichi Akai, believing himself to be the only one capable of killing him. His abilities are extensive. He is a highly skilled detective with superior deductive and information-gathering prowess, acknowledged by Vermouth as the most perceptive member of the Black Organization. Physically, he is proficient in boxing and jujutsu, recognized as the strongest student at the Police Academy. He is also an accomplished driver, tennis player, lockpicker, bomb disposal technician, and cook. The narrative in "The Bride of Halloween" explores Rei Furuya’s past relationships and grief. Flashbacks depict his time at the Police Academy with four friends: Hagiwara, Matsuda, Date, and Hiro. These individuals, who formed his core support system, all died prior to the main storyline. The story highlights how their teachings, values, and memories—such as bomb disposal techniques from Matsuda and judo skills from Date—continue to influence his actions and decisions. He is shown internalizing his grief over their losses, often processing it alone despite having other acquaintances. The narrative underscores how these past relationships fundamentally shape his character.
