Description
Max Taylor (Ryuta Kodai in Japanese media) is the central protagonist of the Dinosaur King franchise. The son of paleontologist Dr. Spike Taylor, Max lives with his father. His best friend, Rex Owen, also resides with them due to Rex's father's frequent fossil excavation absences. Max embodies a happy-go-lucky and enthusiastic nature, sharing his father's deep passion for dinosaurs, though he is also impulsive, occasionally brash, and prone to acting before thinking. He struggles academically, especially in math, and has been described as possessing intellect comparable to a dinosaur's.

Physically, Max has pale skin, spiky brown hair, and large round purple eyes. His signature attire includes a red short-sleeved zip-up hoodie with a yellow hood and hem, a black fanny pack featuring a dinosaur tooth worn at his waist, orange joggers or jeans, red sneakers, and fingerless red gloves. A distinctive visor with functional Triceratops horn flashlights completes his look.

Max's adventure starts when he witnesses a meteor crash in a forest, discovering three elemental stones (Lightning, Wind, Grass) and a dinosaur card. Accidentally rubbing the Triceratops card against the Lightning stone activates Chomp, who becomes his primary dinosaur partner. Max names the dinosaur "Chomp" due to its affectionate habit of biting objects and people. They share a strong bond, though Chomp occasionally wanders off due to distraction. Max specializes in Lightning-element dinosaurs, with the powerful and playful Chomp rarely losing battles.

Max co-founds the D-Team with Rex and Zoe Drake to collect scattered dinosaur cards and oppose the Alpha Gang, antagonists exploiting dinosaurs for world domination. He deeply cares for dinosaurs and despises their mistreatment, acting protectively. This protective drive intensifies after a dream about dinosaur extinction. While heroic, Max displays flaws: he can be selfish, manipulative, and vain, sometimes prioritizing personal recognition over team goals. He reacts extremely if his food—especially favorites like hamburgers, vegetables, carrots, or peppers—is interrupted or taken, leading to temporary irrationality. He also develops crushes on teammate Zoe and Zahrah, a girl met during a mission in Ancient Persia.

In the anime's first season, Max, Rex, and Zoe clash with the Alpha Gang to secure dinosaur cards and prevent misuse. The season ends with the D-Team surrendering their dinosaurs to Rex's biological parents. The second season, "Mesozoic Meltdown," sees Max's home vanish and the D-Team's parents abducted by the Spectral Space Pirates, forcing an uneasy alliance with the Alpha Gang. They travel through time collecting Cosmos Stones to rescue their families, confronting the Space Pirates and Seth, a former Alpha Gang member now aligned with them. Throughout these trials, Max matures, showing increased responsibility and commitment.

The manga presents variations: Max is depicted as a Japanese boy with a frequent bandage on his nose, initially friendless until meeting Rex. Discovering a stone tablet transports him to the Mesozoic era, where he meets a baby Styracosaurus named King. After King's mother is captured by the Alpha Gang (led by Dr. Z), Max resolves to rescue her, adopting the catchphrase "You'll never know unless you try!" This version portrays a more physically aggressive and hot-tempered Max, engaging in direct confrontations with Alpha Gang members like Zander. His dinosaur partner is King, a hybrid ceratopsid analogous to Chomp.

In the arcade and Nintendo DS games, Max is a playable character using a Triceratops (typically Chomp) and specializing in Lightning-element dinosaurs. His appearance often includes a constant nose bandage, a trait only briefly seen in the anime after Chomp's initial bite. Game mechanics involve dinosaur and move cards for battles, with Max's abilities focusing on boosting dinosaur power or searching for specific cards like "Chomp." The DS game narrative follows Max and Rex traveling globally to collect dinosaur cards and thwart Dr. Z.

Max's English surname, Taylor, derives from his father's name; his Japanese surname, Kodai, means "Ancient." His English given name, Maximus, likely references the invalid Triceratops species name *T. maximus* and is used sparingly within the series, much to his chagrin.
