Description
Hakurou is a revered master swordsman and a high-ranking member of the Jura Tempest Federation, who serves as the primary instructor of martial arts for its military forces. His history predates his service to the slime demon lord Rimuru Tempest. Originally a member of the Ogre clan, Hakurou is of mixed heritage; his grandfather was a human samurai named Byakuya Araki who migrated from another world, and his grandmother was from the Ogre tribe. From his grandfather, he inherited the secret techniques of the Oboro-ryu school of swordsmanship. Over three hundred years ago, he once taught swordsmanship to Gazel Dwargo, the King of the Dwarves. For many years, he served as a vassal in the Ogre village before it was destroyed by the Orc Lord, after which he and the other survivors, including Benimaru and Shion, encountered and initially mistook Rimuru for their enemy.
In terms of personality, Hakurou embodies the archetype of the wise and patient elder, possessing a calm and polite demeanor. However, this tranquility belies a formidable strictness when he assumes his role as an instructor. He is a demanding and rigorous teacher, known for pushing his students to their absolute limits in daily training sessions, a process often accompanied by the sounds of struggle and exertion. While he is generally kind and respectful, he can become cold and harsh in the face of combat or laziness, particularly when someone like the goblin Gobta disrespectfully refers to him as an old man. His primary motivation is to hone the martial abilities of Tempest's forces, believing that strength and discipline are essential for the nation's survival and prosperity. He takes his responsibility as an instructor and military advisor very seriously.
Hakurou holds a vital role within the Jura Tempest Federation. He is the nation's foremost expert on swordsmanship and the central figure responsible for training all of its key combatants. Almost every monster in Tempest who wields a sword, from the highest executives to common soldiers, has been shaped by his teachings. His students include the powerful ogre leaders like Benimaru, Shion, and Souei, as well as the often-ridiculed but talented Gobta. Beyond being a trainer, he acts as a military advisor and a senior strategist, commanding forces in major conflicts, such as the battle against the otherworlders from the Farmus Kingdom. He has a complex relationship with King Gazel Dwargo, who holds Hakurou in such high esteem that he treats Rimuru favorably as a result of his connection to the sword master.
As a character, Hakurou has undergone a notable physical transformation. When first encountered, he appeared as an elderly Ogre with wrinkled features. After being named by Rimuru and evolving into a Kijin, or a Mystic Oni, his appearance was de-aged, making him look like a distinguished, middle-aged man with sharp eyes. This evolution also significantly extended his already long lifespan, which was remarkable considering he had already survived for over three centuries as a normal Ogre. Later developments in source material reveal that he has a daughter named Momiji, who is the next chief of the Tengu tribe, adding a layer to his character as a protective father.
Despite his advanced age, Hakurou is one of the most powerful warriors in the series, possessing abilities that allow him to challenge even Rimuru. His skill set relies not on raw magical power but on centuries of experience and perfected technique. He possesses a Unique Skill known as "He Who Peers into the Realm of Enlightenment" or "Martial Arts Master," which grants him abilities such as "Mind Accelerate," allowing him to speed up his thought process by a thousand times, and an advanced form of future prediction that lets him read his opponent's moves before they happen. He can utilize techniques like "Formhide" to erase his presence from an opponent's perception and can employ the secret sword technique "Yaezakura Hakkasen," which delivers simultaneous slashes that can fell an enemy eight times over in an instant. His mastery over the blade is such that he can effortlessly cut through spiritual beings and spatial attacks, making him a formidable, almost untouchable combatant despite relying on pure martial arts rather than magic.
