Description
Hatori Soma is a recurring character in Fruits Basket 2nd Season, recognized as the Dragon of the Chinese Zodiac. Although his zodiac spirit is that of the dragon, his cursed form is actually a seahorse, which in Japanese culture is interpreted as a baby dragon, a fact that has left him feeling somewhat self-conscious. He is approximately twenty-six to twenty-eight years old, placing him in the same generation as his close friends Shigure and Ayame Soma. Hatori serves as the personal physician for the Soma family, a role that extends beyond general medical practice to include a specialized, inherited ability to suppress or erase the memories of outsiders who discover the family's secret regarding the zodiac curse.

In terms of personality, Hatori presents a stark contrast to his two closest friends. While Shigure is cunning and playful and Ayame is flamboyant and eccentric, Hatori is composed, stern, and appears somber or even cold to those who do not know him well. This reserved and serious demeanor is partly a product of his upbringing and responsibilities within the restrictive Soma household, where he was expected to carry out difficult duties, such as erasing the memories of innocent people, without emotional involvement. Despite this intimidating exterior, Hatori possesses a deeply compassionate and kind heart. His actions are often motivated by a desire to protect others from the pain he has experienced, even if his blunt and emotionally clumsy manner of communicating this concern can be misinterpreted as a threat.

Hatori's primary motivation throughout the second season is informed by a tragic past romance. He was previously in love with Kana, a woman from the non-cursed branch of the Soma family who worked as his assistant. When Hatori sought permission from Akito, the head of the family, to marry Kana, Akito flew into a violent rage and threw a pot, permanently damaging Hatori's left eye and leaving him nearly blind. The incident caused Kana to spiral into a deep depression, blaming herself entirely for Hatori's injury. To free her from this unbearable guilt and suffering, Hatori made the painful decision to erase all her memories of him and their relationship, an act that left him emotionally scarred and resigned to a lonely life. His motivation in the present is to serve as a quiet protector, warning individuals like Tohru Honda of the dangers of becoming close to the Soma family so that they might avoid a similar fate.

Within the story, Hatori acts as a bridge between the younger zodiac members and the oppressive authority of Akito. He is one of the few people who knows that Akito is female, a closely guarded secret, and he is also aware of many of Shigure's ambitions and schemes, though he maintains a cautious distance from them. His role often places him in tense situations, such as when he visits the school festival prepared to erase Tohru's memories if necessary. His key relationships are the Mabudachi Trio, the informal group consisting of himself, Shigure, and Ayame. Among them, Hatori is the voice of reason and the only person who can effectively control Ayame's most outlandish behavior. He also shares a significant, developing connection with Mayuko Shiraki, Tohru's homeroom teacher, who was Kana's best friend. Shigure orchestrates a reunion between Hatori and Mayu, and her frank, lively, and confrontational personality stands in stark contrast to Kana's gentleness, slowly beginning to melt the ice around Hatori's heart.

Over the course of the second season, Hatori experiences notable development as he begins to move past his guilt and grief. His interactions with Tohru Honda are central to this change. He sees a strong resemblance between Tohru and Kana, particularly in their optimistic nature and their gentle reaction to the curse, leading him to decide that "someday the snow will melt" around her. This encounter helps him find closure upon learning that Kana has found happiness and is engaged to someone else, freeing him to consider his own future. His arc in this season is defined by the gradual thawing of his winter, with characters like Mayu representing the possibility of a new spring. As the family doctor, he has no supernatural abilities beyond his specific role; his notable skills are his medical expertise and the memory-suppression technique, which is portrayed as a function of his duty rather than a combat-oriented power.
