Description
Hatori Sohma serves as the private physician for the Sohma family, cursed by the spirit of the dragon from the Chinese zodiac. Due to the curse weakening over time, he transforms into an 8-centimeter seahorse, not a dragon, when embraced by someone of the opposite sex or under significant stress. He presents a tall, somber figure with sharp purple eyes and black hair styled in an "M-shaped" bang covering his left eye, typically dressed in professional suits or a white doctor's coat. A distinctive scar marks his left eye, causing near-blindness on that side.

Born two months prematurely due to the dragon spirit's influence, Hatori grew up in a strict, cold household. His mother died during his elementary school years, and his father passed from illness while Hatori was in high school. From his father, he inherited the duty of memory suppression—a technique passed down through his family line—erasing the memories of outsiders who discover the Sohma curse. He performed this duty under family orders, including erasing the memories of Yuki Sohma's childhood friends and Momiji Sohma's mother, actions that seeded lasting guilt.

In his youth, he formed a close bond with Shigure and Ayame Sohma, becoming the "Mabudachi Trio," attending elementary through high school together. Hatori sensed Akito Sohma's conception through a dream that made him awaken crying. He later joined Shigure, Ayame, and Kureno in touching Ren Sohma's womb to connect with the unborn "God" and was among those instructed to keep Akito's biological sex secret after birth.

As the dedicated Sohma family physician, Hatori met his clinic assistant, Kana Sohma, approximately two years before the main story. Initially indifferent, he was drawn to her cheerful nature, especially after she answered his question about snow melting into spring rather than water—symbolizing her warmth. They fell in love, and Kana accepted him despite his curse. When Hatori sought Akito's permission to marry, Akito attacked him with a vase, severely injuring his left eye. Blamed by Akito for the incident, Kana succumbed to guilt and depression. To alleviate her suffering, Hatori erased her memories of their relationship. Kana eventually married another man; Hatori avoided her wedding to prevent triggering latent memories.

Hatori presents as reserved, composed, and stern, often perceived as intimidating or cold. This masks a deeply compassionate, self-sacrificing nature; he prioritizes others' well-being, warning Tohru Honda against Sohma involvement to protect her from heartbreak like Kana's. He harbors intense guilt over his memory erasure duty, believing he doesn't deserve personal happiness. Despite his seriousness, he displays subtle humor, tricking Yuki and Kyo into smiling for a photo or administering extra shots to an annoying Shigure. His loyalty to Shigure and Ayame endures, frequently acting as their trio's stabilizing force.

Tohru Honda reminds Hatori of Kana through shared traits, including her answer about snow melting into spring. Later, Shigure orchestrates a reunion between Hatori and Mayuko Shiraki, Kana's best friend who had harbored feelings for him since their first meeting. They begin dating, progressing to marriage. In the sequel *Fruits Basket Another*, they have a daughter, Kinu Sohma. Hatori's story concludes with him finding peace and renewed capacity for love, symbolized by his invitation to Mayuko for an Okinawa vacation in the original series' final chapter.
