Description
Hiro Soma is a supporting character who appears in Fruits Basket 2nd Season as the latest member of the zodiac to be introduced. He is a young boy, approximately twelve years old, and is cursed by the spirit of the sheep. His appearance features short, spiky brown hair and eyes of a similar shade, and he is often seen wearing his school uniform, which he keeps neatly tailored as he dislikes slovenliness.
Upon his first encounter with Tohru Honda, Hiro immediately establishes himself as the most openly hostile of the zodiac members towards her. He is exceedingly sharp-tongued, brash, and prone to delivering sarcastic remarks, making him come across as rude and confrontational. His behavior stems from a combination of his natural precociousness and a deep-seated jealousy. He resents Tohru because of the close bond she has formed with Kisa Soma, a fellow zodiac member and the girl for whom Hiro has very strong feelings. Because he feels he failed to protect Kisa, seeing Tohru succeed in comforting her makes him see the kind-hearted girl as a rival.
Despite his abrasive exterior, Hiro is a thoughtful and intelligent boy who is acutely aware of his own shortcomings. His primary motivation is a desperate desire to be seen as a mature adult rather than a powerless child. He uses complicated words and tries to act grown-up, but this often backfires, making his childishness even more apparent. This internal conflict is fueled by intense guilt; in the past, Hiro confessed his love for Kisa to the family head, Akito. In retaliation, Akito severely beat Kisa, an event for which Hiro has never forgiven himself. This trauma led him to distance himself from Kisa in an attempt to keep her safe, further compounding his feelings of helplessness.
Hiro's role in the story primarily revolves around his relationships with Kisa and Tohru. His love for Kisa is the most significant driving force behind his actions, and his fear of causing her more pain is what initially makes him push her away. His interactions with Tohru serve as a major point of development. While he begins by lashing out and criticizing her, he is also forced to confront his own behavior. As he observes how Tohru brings a smile to Kisa's face, he slowly begins to reconsider his approach to kindness, even if he is reluctant to admit it. His family life serves as a notable contrast to many other cursed Sohmas; he has loving and supportive parents, and he later takes on the role of a caring older brother to his younger sister, Hinata.
Throughout his appearance in the second season, Hiro undergoes noticeable development. He begins to recognize that his cruel words and attempts to act like a "callous jerk" are turning him into someone he does not wish to be. Through his interactions with Tohru, Kisa, and others, he learns that admitting his feelings of childishness and vulnerability is not a sign of weakness but rather a form of courage. As a cursed Sohma, his notable ability is his transformation into a sheep whenever he is hugged by a member of the opposite sex or when his body comes under a great deal of physical stress. He also possesses a quick intellect, which he uses in his arguments, though it is no replacement for the emotional maturity he seeks to gain.
