Description
Kuro is a 121-year-old Cat Sídhe demon serving as Rin Okumura's familiar. He was initially enshrined as a protective deity for ancient Japanese silkworm farmers, receiving offerings and festivals in exchange for guarding their silkworms from predators and disasters. When silk cultivation declined and humans abandoned his shrine, he attacked construction crews developing his sacred land. Exorcist Shiro Fujimoto intervened, calming Kuro with catnip wine and offering him a familiar role. Kuro then guarded the Southern Rear Entrance of True Cross Academy for the True Cross Order.
After Shiro Fujimoto's death, Kuro entered a violent rampage at the academy, denying the news and attacking exorcists. Rin Okumura, who could hear Kuro's thoughts, recognized his profound loneliness and grief. Rin confronted Kuro, acknowledged Shiro's death, and related to his pain. This empathy allowed Kuro to accept Shiro's passing, leading to reconciliation. Kuro then formed a new bond with Rin, becoming his familiar. Shiro's "poison" used to subdue Kuro was revealed as catnip wine, which Kuro consumed and became intoxicated. Kuro now primarily resides with Rin and Yukio, often sleeping on Rin's back.
Kuro can transform from a small, two-tailed black cat into a giant nekomata form, gaining immense physical strength capable of toppling heavy machinery. He retains demon telepathy for mental communication with other demons and exhibits heightened auditory senses. He is immune to holy medicines and exorcism tools. Kuro dislikes raw squid, which makes him ill, and hot foods due to a "cat tongue" sensitivity. He enjoys sukiyaki (if cooled) and Shiro's catnip wine.
Kuro exhibits a playful, energetic feline personality, frequently seeking interaction with Rin. Despite his generally friendly demeanor toward humans, he displays fierce protectiveness when provoked, as seen during his shrine's destruction. His attachment to trusted individuals is profound; after choosing to remain with humans post-Shiro's death despite his contract ending, Kuro was exiled by his own kind and permanently lost the ability to assume a human form. He views his relationship with Rin as companionship rather than servitude.
During the Shimane Illuminati arc, Kuro accompanies Rin and the exorcist trainees ("Exwires") on missions, including investigating supernatural phenomena at True Cross Academy and the subsequent conflict. He is present during the True Cross Academy Festival when Lucifer declares war on the exorcists. While Kuro participates in operations, his role primarily involves transportation in his nekomata form or reconnaissance. No significant new character development occurs for him during this saga beyond his established loyalty and support for Rin.
