Description
Escanor holds the title of Lion's Sin of Pride within the Seven Deadly Sins. His innate power, Sunshine, causes extreme physical and personality shifts tied to the sun's cycle. At night, he manifests as a frail, meek man approximately 165 cm tall, timid and excessively apologetic. Daylight triggers a transformation; his body swells into muscular grandeur, reaching 325 cm, while his personality grows increasingly domineering and arrogant. At noon, he achieves "The One," a state of supreme confidence and overwhelming power. Both personas share a love for poetry and deep loyalty to their comrades, yet each despises the other: the night form feels shame over the day form's actions, and the day form pities the night form's weakness.
Born 59 years ago as a prince of Castellio, his early life was defined by trauma and isolation after Sunshine first manifested, causing him to accidentally break his brother Daymond's arm. Disowned by his parents and condemned as a monster, he faced execution until a woman named Rosa saved him by hiding him in a drifting barrel. Years later, he returned to find Castellio ruined and Rosa gone. At age eight, he unintentionally defeated a rampaging monster in Liones, leading to a confrontation with Holy Knights. After injuring them, including Great Holy Knight Zaratras, he was captured and sentenced to death for the Sin of Pride. Meliodas intervened, recruiting him as the seventh Sin despite Escanor's fear of harming others with his power.
Sunshine grants Escanor strength proportional to the sun's intensity. He is weakest at midnight, with minimal combat ability. His power escalates steadily from dawn, peaking at noon when he becomes the strongest Sin. This power originally belonged to Mael, one of the Four Archangels of the Goddess Clan, though it manifested in Escanor for unknown reasons. Sunshine strains his human body, shortening his lifespan and emitting intense, uncontrolled heat that melts his surroundings. To manage this, he wields the Divine Axe Rhitta, which absorbs excess heat and can release stored solar energy. Key combat techniques include "Cruel Sun" (a concentrated solar orb), "Pride Flare" (its explosive variant), and "The One" (his near-invincible noon state). During the battle against the Demon King, he surpassed his limits with "The One: Ultimate," converting his life force into power to transcend time constraints.
Escanor's duality shapes his interactions. At night, he is humble, deeply loyal, and prioritizes responsibilities like delivering alcohol despite personal risk. By day, his pride manifests as condescension, yet he acknowledges the strength of foes like Meliodas and Estarossa, cooperating with allies when necessary. His pride grants immunity to certain curses, like Estarossa's Commandment of Love, as he pities rather than hates opponents. Both personas share unwavering devotion to the Seven Deadly Sins; he consistently protects them, even shielding Holy Knights from an Indura spore after losing Sunshine, enduring severe injuries through sheer willpower. His final act was sacrificing himself using "The One: Ultimate" to aid Meliodas against the Demon King, an act his friends vehemently opposed. In his last moments, he expressed gratitude to his comrades, blending humility and pride.
His relationship with Merlin is pivotal. He fell in love upon their first meeting, as she showed interest in his power without fear. She became his emotional anchor, inspiring him to fight even in tournaments by envisioning her as his "sun." Though aware his feelings might be unrequited, both personas cherish her—his day form boasts to impress her, while his night form quietly supports her. He was visibly disheartened when mistakenly believing Merlin loved Arthur. Despite his pride, he sought Hawk's help to confess his feelings, showing vulnerability.
Escanor's character arc centers on self-acceptance. Initially viewing Sunshine as a curse and grappling with being labeled a monster, he eventually embraced both his strength and frailty, recognizing his right to exist. His resolve to protect others never wavered, culminating in his ultimate sacrifice. After losing Sunshine permanently, he continued aiding allies without powers until Mael returned them, warning it would hasten his death—a risk Escanor accepted without hesitation.
