Description
Muzan Kibutsuji is the first demon ever to exist, having transformed from a human noble over a thousand years ago during the Heian period. As a young man, he suffered from a terminal illness that would have killed him before the age of twenty. A physician administered an experimental treatment using a rare flower known as the Blue Spider Lily, curing his disease but triggering an unintended mutation. In a fit of impatience and rage before the treatment was complete, Muzan killed the physician, forever trapping himself in an incomplete state. He gained immense power and near-immortality but retained a critical vulnerability to sunlight. This singular flaw became the driving obsession of his existence.

Muzan possesses a cold, ruthless, and exceptionally intelligent demeanor. He is a profound narcissist who regards himself as the closest thing to a perfect being and views all other life as disposable tools. Humans hold no value for him, and he shows little regard even for the demons he creates, punishing failure with brutal, often fatal, severity. Underneath his composed and detached exterior, he harbors a deep-seated cowardice. He avoids direct conflict whenever possible, preferring to use his vast network of minions to accomplish his goals. When cornered, his composure shatters, revealing a frantic desperation to survive at any cost. His sole motivation is to conquer his weakness to sunlight and achieve true immortality, a quest that has consumed him for centuries.

In the story, Muzan serves as the progenitor of all demons, the source of their power, and the driving force behind the conflict. He orchestrates the creation of the Twelve Kizuki, his most powerful servant demons, and commands them through blood-based control, fear, and the ability to kill them instantly at a distance. His role in the Infinity Castle arc is that of a cornered tyrant. After being tricked into entering the trap set by the Demon Slayer Corps and the doctor demon Tamayo, he uses the Infinity Castle, a shifting fortress controlled by the demon Nakime, as a battlefield to isolate and destroy the Hashira and the young slayers. He is the final obstacle, and the battle against him becomes a desperate race to survive until sunrise.

Key relationships define Muzan's history and his downfall. He shares a deep, ancient enmity with the Ubuyashiki family, who have led the Demon Slayer Corps for generations. His greatest trauma stems from his encounter with the swordsman Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the only human who ever pushed him to the brink of death, leaving scars on his cells that never healed. This fear was so profound that he inadvertently instilled a panic response in all demons to the hanafuda earrings worn by Yoriichi. This reaction led to the slaughter of the Kamado family, setting the protagonist Tanjiro Kamado on his path. He also has a complex connection with Tamayo, a demon who escaped his control and dedicated herself to destroying him, using her medical expertise to create a drug that ages him and disables his escape abilities.

While Muzan does not experience traditional character development in a moral sense, he does undergo a visible shift in the final arc. His millennia of careful planning and absolute control begin to erode. The effects of Tamayo's drug force him to age rapidly and weaken, stripping away his ability to dominate the battlefield effortlessly. His composed facade fractures into raw panic and rage as he realizes he is genuinely threatened. He is forced to abandon his human disguises and adopt monstrous forms, including a gigantic, baby-like shape in a final, failing effort to protect himself from the sun. His final act is a desperate attempt to possess Tanjiro's body, transferring his consciousness into the young slayer in a last-ditch effort to survive.

Muzan possesses a suite of overwhelming abilities. His primary power is biokinesis, a Blood Demon Art that allows him to manipulate the structure of his own body at will. He can shapeshift into any form, from a child to a woman to a nobleman, enabling him to hide in plain sight for centuries. In combat, he can transform his limbs into massive, whip-like appendages covered in sharp blades and venomous mouths. His physical capabilities are far beyond any other demon; he possesses superhuman strength, speed, and reflexes. His regeneration is nearly instantaneous, allowing him to regrow limbs and even his head from a nichirin blade wound in seconds. Anatomically, he is unique, having developed seven hearts and five brains distributed throughout his body, making him nearly impossible to kill through conventional decapitation. He can also manipulate his own blood outside his body, creating sharp tendrils known as Black Blood, Brambles to entangle and impale opponents. He can release shockwave energy blasts that disrupt an opponent's nervous system, causing seizures and paralysis. As the source of all demons, he can read their minds, communicate telepathically with them, access their memories, and command them with absolute authority. Any demon who speaks his name is instantly killed by a curse embedded in their blood.
